Enzo Fernández is expected to sit out Benfica vs Braga at the weekend after Liverpool increased efforts to sign him, according to reports.

This comes from O Jogo. They claim that the race to sign Enzo Fernández has seriously heated up and he could now leave Benfica in January.

In fact, clubs are pushing so hard to sign Enzo that he may not play this weekend. He was supposed to feature for Benfica against Braga. The size of his potential transfer fee, however, means no one can afford to risk an injury here.

That fee could be around £106m. It would be a record for most clubs, including Liverpool – one of those increasing their efforts to sign Enzo. Manchester United and Chelsea join them in that.

It appears we might not wait much longer before Enzo has a new home.

Enzo Fernández to miss Benfica vs Braga

The implication here is that Enzo may have played his final game for Benfica. That’s massive, given all reports up to now suggested he wasn’t for sale in January.

After all, Benfica have a title race to compete in and two Champions League matches against Club Brugge. They’ve got a fantastic shot at making the quarter-finals again, really.

Keeping Enzo increases those chances. Admittedly, getting £106m would also do that – and perhaps that’s what happened here. Benfica might actually get his release clause and literally can’t pass it up.

Then, with the money we’re talking about, there’s no need to risk an injury at the weekend. It does make sense.

We’re just going to hope that it’s Liverpool applying the most pressure here. We’d absolutely love to see Enzo at Anfield for the rest of the season and beyond as he’s one of the best young midfielders around.

Though, it does come down to Jude Bellingham’s availability. The Reds certainly aren’t getting him in January but we wouldn’t want to sign Enzo and lack the funds for Bellingham. It’s got to be both – which seems impossibly expensive – or the Englishman.

We should get Liverpool’s answer on that soon enough.
