Caoimhín Kelleher talked about his future this week and whether he could leave Liverpool in 2023. The goalkeeper is the Reds’ no.2.

Caoimhín Kelleher has shown his quality over the last two season, proving himself to be a fantastic goalkeeper. He’s held his own in the Premier League, Champions League and in a cup final – Liverpool can count on him.

But there’s an obvious problem. Liverpool have arguably the world’s best between the sticks in Alisson Becker and the Brazilian isn’t going anywhere soon.

It means that as well as Kelleher plays, he’s still not any closer to playing regularly. It’s hard to see him becoming a regular until Alisson retires, in fact.

2023 is a massive year for him, then. Kelleher is now 24 and can’t really spend too much longer as a backup player. Not if he wants to truly reach his potential.

What does he think, then? The player talked to the Liverpool Echo this week about his future and it sounds as though he’s open to leaving next year.

Caoimhín Kelleher could leave Liverpool

“I am quite relaxed, so I don’t mind watching, but obviously I’d rather be playing but I just try to be as focused as I can be when I watch so I am ready if I am needed,” said Kelleher on being a backup option. “Listen, I think we’ve obviously only just come back into the middle of the season.

“So we’ll just see what the season brings and then after that we’ll see, we’ll see what happens after that. But I think at the moment, for now, I just have to be focused on trying to be ready for Liverpool.”

It’s a perfect non-committal answer, then. Kelleher knows full well that his options need to remain constantly open, given a club could come knocking at any time.

A place as Liverpool’s no.2 is a great one for most players, certainly. Kelleher, though, is good enough to play Champions League football and could undoubtedly feature regularly in the Premier League. He’ll know that – and would face a massive decision should a club offer it.

Until then, it’s about waiting for his chance – but he’s perfectly aware that 2023 could be a year of change for him.
