Liverpool bid for £62million midfielder ‘rejected’ as January transfer window opens

Jurgen Klopp will be looking to strengthen his midfield options during the January transfer window.

Liverpool’s search for additional midfield resources has taken them down the tracks to Brighton, but according to one report, efforts to land Moises Caicedo have hit the buffers.

The Reds have been linked with the Seagulls’ 21-year-old since the summer, but no firm offer materialised before the new season got underway. However, Ecuadorian outlet Teradeportes (as cited by Football.London ) claims that Liverpool have had a £62million bid rejected by the south coast club.

Premier League rivals Chelsea are also said to be interested in acquiring Ecuador international Caicedo, in a move that would reunite him with former Brighton boss Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge.

Jurgen Klopp is all-too aware of the need to increase his midfield options after an underwhelming start to the Premier League season. The Reds have won their last four league matches which has allowed them to consolidate sixth place in the table, closing the gap on Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

But performances since returning to action after the World Cup have exposed Liverpool’s short-comings in midfield and if Klopp is to deliver another season of Champions League football next season, a move in the current transfer window seems to be a must.

A costly move for Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez looks unlikely, but other world cup stars such as Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Caicedo’s Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister continue to be linked with a move to Anfield.
