Liverpool are expected to discover this month whether Roberto Firmino will extend his Liverpool career beyond the end of the season.
Roberto Firmino’s talks over a new Liverpool deal are “on the right track” with the striker expected to make a decision on his future this month.
Firmino, who arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2015 and has made 348 appearances, is out of contract at the end of the season with talks having been ongoing for several months over a new deal.
Jurgen Klopp has long made clear his desire to keep the 31-year-old Brazilian, with the player himself having expressed his intention to stay.
Now Firmino’s agent Roger Wittman has detailed the current position of his client with a final call likely in the coming weeks.
“It’s a very long relationship between Roberto and Liverpool,” Wittmann said to Sky Germany. “Roberto feels good. At the moment, we’re in a great exchange and in February we’ll probably know where the journey is going.
“But Roberto also has to have a say in order to reach an agreement with Liverpool. We’re on the right track (and) we’re having really good talks with Liverpool. They’re a superbly positioned club.”
Firmino has nine goals in 21 appearances this season but hasn’t featured since November having suffered a calf problem shortly before the resumption of the season after the World Cup. Klopp said on Friday the player is “a couple of weeks” away from a return to training.
Firmino is one of several Liverpool players due to be out of contract in the summer along with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Adrian.
