Liverpool have been asking Celta Vigo to specifiy the exact terms surrounding Gabri Veiga’s release clause.

Veiga has emerged as a top candidate to join Liverpool this summer, with agent talks reportedly well underway. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano though, the Reds are not alone in their interest.

Speaking on his YouTube channel this morning, Romano claimed that Chelsea are now right there with Liverpool in the race to sign the 21-year-old. Both clubs have reportedly asked for information on Veiga, including whether his £34m release clause is negotiable.

“I’m told that this week, in kind of a secret way, Chelsea asked for information for Gabri Veiga, midfielder of Celta Vigo,” said the journalist. “We know he’s one of the players in the list of Liverpool. Liverpool did exactly the same a few days ago, asking for information on the player and on the release clause, Chelsea are now also informed.

“Both clubs wanted to know how does it work for the release clause, €40m [£34m]. How many years to pay the release clause, what kind of payment terms, if there’s a chance to negotiate around the clause. So, both Chelsea and Liverpool are now well informed on Gabri Veiga who is represented by super agent Pini Zahavi. Keep an eye on the situation.”

Liverpool weighing up Veiga offer

Liverpool don’t seem to be in a huge rush to decide who should join Alexis Mac Allister in the Anfield arrivals lounge this summer.

As the days tick down until pre-season is upon us, Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke appear to be keeping a few plates spinning. The ‘spectacular’ Veiga is very much one of those up in the air.

Along with Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, Ryan Gravenberch and Romeo Lavia, the Spaniard is one of a clutch of players Liverpool look set to watch at the upcoming U21 Euros.

Maybe their performances there will help determine which of them – if any – end up at Anfield.

On top of good displays, one big factor Liverpool will consider when pulling the trigger will be the cost of doing business. As Veiga has a decently-priced release clause, they already know the maximum they’ll have to pay to get him out of Vigo.

But if they can haggle the £34m fee down even further, that will be attractive to them.

That may seem cheap to some, but Liverpool have a lot to do this summer. If they can pinch a few pennies somewhere, we know that they will. The answers they received from Celta and Zahavi could be in key in deciding their summer plans.
