‘Never say never’ – Romano not ruling out Liverpool move for ‘exceptional’ Real Madrid wizard

Fabrizio Romano has not ruled out Liverpool signing Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, but believes it would be a’really difficult’ transfer to pull off.

The Reds were linked with the France midfielder in 2022 when he was at AS Monaco (TEAMtalk), but he ultimately chose to join Real Madrid.

Neil Jones told Empire of the Kop at the end of June that Anfield’s interest in the 23-year-old is ‘permanent,’ with Jurgen Klopp seemingly unfazed by missing out on the player last year.

Romano was speaking to Born and Red about Liverpool and Tchouameni, saying that a move for him would be highly unlikely but not entirely ruled out.

“I think it’s going to be very complicated for Tchouameni,” the Italian predicted.According to what I’ve heard, Real Madrid views Tchouameni as a key player in their project.

“Never say never in the market, but at the moment it appears very difficult, and I believe part of Real Madrid’s plan for next season is to have a very strong midfield.”

“When you talk about Liverpool’s interest, it’s more than that, because a year ago, Jurgen Klopp was pushing hard for Aurelin Tchouameni.” He called the player several times, tried to persuade the player, and was almost successful.

“He gave it his all, but in the end, Tchouameni chose Real Madrid because it has been his dream since he was a child, his biggest dream in life, and he considers Real Madrid to be the greatest club in the world.” The truth is that Klopp worked very hard to sign Tchouameni.

“I believe Liverpool will have a difficult summer, but never say never.”

There have been reports that Real Madrid are considering offers in the region of €80 million (£68.4 million) if such a bid is presented (Sport, via Sport Witness), but whether Liverpool would spend that much on a third midfield recruit this summer remains to be seen.

Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai both cost nearly £100 million (Transfermarkt), so it’s difficult to see the Reds spending big money on another midfielder.

There’s also the question of whether Tchouameni would want to leave the Bernabeu after only a year, given Romano’s claim that the 23-year-old’s childhood dream was to play for Los Blancos.

Furthermore, unlike another Liverpool-linked midfielder in Ryan Gravenberch, the Frenchman has been a regular starter for his club (Transfermarkt), so it’s difficult to imagine him pushing for a move at this point.

It’s unlikely to happen this year, but the fact that the Italian hasn’t completely dismissed the possibility of the Real Madrid star – who Paul Pogba previously praised for his exceptional technique and physical qualities (Football Transfers) – becoming a Reds player is encouraging.
