Liverpool player ratings: several players score 8/10 but one 4/10 in Greuther Furth draw – gallery

Liverpool player ratings from the 4-4 pre-season friendly draw against Greuther Furth.

Liverpool’s second pre-season friendly of the summer ended in an eventful 4-4 draw against Greuther Furth.

Darwin Nunez netted a double, with Mo Salah and Luis Diaz on target against the 2. Bundesliga side behind closed doors in Germany.

Liverpool made a bright start and could have gone ahead after just two minutes when Andy Robertson burst through on goal but saw his effort blocked.

Then on seven minutes, Diaz went on a surging run from his own half before curling a right-footed shot that was kept out by the Furth keeper.

However, it would be the Colombia international who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Diaz weaved his way past several defenders before nonchalantly finding the far corner.

Diogo Jota almost doubled the advantage only two minutes later when he pilfered possession but shot wide after being left one-vs-one with the keeper. Jota was lively throughout the first period and again nipped in to win the ball – only this time in the Furth box. The Portuguese perhaps could have gone down but stayed on his feet and saw his shot clip the post.

Jurgen Klopp changed his entire starting line-up for the second half – and they started in the worst possible manner. Furth were gifted an equaliser in the 47th minute when goalkeeper Adrian’s poor pass to James McConnell saw Julian Green nip in and finish.

But the Reds soon took charge with Nunez restoring the advantage on 50 minutes when he latched on to Mo Salah’s through ball, rounded the keeper and finished into an empty net. Nine minutes later, Nunez had his second of the game when he again displayed his composure after being set free by Salah.

Yet a disjointed Liverpool performance would see them capitulate. Lukas Petkov equalised for the German hosts, although there appeared to be a hint of offside in the build-up. The Reds’ poor play in the rearguard would continue, though, with Armindo Sieb firing a double to leave the Reds shellshocked.

Klopp’s men pushed for an equaliser – and finally had one with a minute remaining. This time, Nunez turned provider to pick out Salah at the back post, whose improvised close-range finish found the back of the net.

Here’s how we rated the Liverpool players.

Liverpool star confirms he wants to leave the club this summer and has played his last game for the club

One Liverpool star has appeared to confirm his desire to depart Anfield ahead of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool star confirms he wants to leave the club this summer and has played his last game for the club

It has been a fantastic campaign for Liverpool after they successfully claimed the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s debut season.

The Dutchman had the almost impossible task of replacing Jurgen Klopp, but quickly endeared himself to the Anfield faithful.

Looking ahead, Liverpool are set to be active in the summer transfer window.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will soon depart upon the expiration of his contract, with the 26-year-old expected to join Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez have all been heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, current second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher appeared to express his desire to leave the club.

He said to Optus Sport: “I think I’ve said it before as well that I feel like I’m good enough to be a number one.

“I feel like I’m good enough to play week in, week out – and that’s what I’m looking to do.”

Kelleher added: “This season I was lucky enough to play a lot of games, but it’s definitely something I’m looking at.”

The 26-year-old has often deputised for first-choice stopper Alisson Becker, and has proved to be a reliable backup.

During the 24/25 campaign, Kelleher made a total of 20 appearances across all competitions, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

Over the past few months, the Irishman has been linked with a host of different clubs, including the likes of Cheslea, West Ham United and Newcastle United.

Kelleher’s future has been a talking point ever since Liverpool agreed a deal to bring in Valencia stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.

The Georgian is set to become Alisson’s challenger heading into the 25/26 season.

Speaking recently, Mamardashvili said: “They are looking at me as the Liverpool goalkeeper for the next ten years. So my next step will be the same as it was in Valencia, that I go and prove myself and show what I can do.

“The main thing is patience, training, and hard work. Everything else will come. I’m not considering another loan. I will spend next season at Liverpool, I think it will be good and training with Alisson will help me grow and gain experience.”

Cameras catch what Liverpool players were doing at AXA training centre this morning

Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday ensured the Premier League trophy will return to Merseyside.

The Reds put in a dominant display to humble Ange Postecoglou’s men after going a goal down in the first 12 minutes.

In anticipation of lifting No.20 in 2024/25, the club have already made changes at the AXA training centre to commemorate the achievement. ‘Premier League Champions’ now adorns the glass exterior of the complex.

Curtis Jones & Cody Gakpo practice their trophy lift

In further imagery released by Liverpool’s X (formerly Twitter) account, the players are likewise keeping one eye trained on the inevitable.

Both Cody Gakpo (who was at the centre of a minor FA dispute) and Curtis Jones were snapped practising their trophy lifts ahead of the end of the campaign.

It’s going to be a full-on party atmosphere right through to the final day of the league season!

https://x.com/LFC/status/1917533136310698443?t=qaTESe0ExXVYLiIz4OOAmA&s=19

They aren’t the only ones getting in on the fun either! A handful of fans over in Thailand were seen holding their own mock Premier League trophy parade in honour of the event.

When will Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy?

What a change a few years make! Back in 2019/20, social distancing laws around the COVID-19 pandemic meant that Liverpool’s players couldn’t celebrate winning the title in front of fans.

We’ve already seen that the club has had a chance to rectify that in part at the weekend, and there’ll be further opportunities coming.

For starters, Virgil van Dijk will be set to lay his hands on the Premier League trophy after our final game of the campaign, against Crystal Palace (May 25).

When is Liverpool’s trophy parade?

Celebrations at Anfield at the end of the 2024/25 season will be followed a day later (Monday May 26) with an open-top bus parade.

Expect to see Cody Gakpo and Co. getting more than their fill of the Premier League trophy!

Federico Chiesa out at Liverpool – guess who’s stealing his spot

Federico Chiesa Omitted Again as Slot Eyes Alvarez for Liverpool Overhaul

Federico Chiesa out at Liverpool – guess who’s stealing his spot

Federico Chiesa was absent from Liverpool’s trip to Leicester, reigniting speculation about his future under new manager Arne Slot.

Despite Liverpool’s attacking struggles—particularly with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez misfiring—Chiesa remains on the fringes. The Italian has barely featured in the Premier League this season, even as others falter.

Luis Diaz started the game but failed to make his chances count. Jota replaced him, only to continue his frustrating run in front of goal. Yet again, Slot overlooked Chiesa, a decision that raises questions about trust and tactics.

Slot has made it clear that Chiesa is seen strictly as backup for Mohamed Salah, not a central attacking option. But that explanation hasn’t convinced fans. With a modest £12 million price tag, many feel Chiesa never got a fair shot—and his signing could soon be chalked up as a missed opportunity.

Chiesa Out, Alvarez In?

A summer exit for Chiesa seems increasingly likely, reminiscent of Jari Litmanen’s brief stint at Anfield. Big changes are expected in Liverpool’s forward line, with only Salah and Cody Gakpo looking secure.

Diaz and Jota could be sold if suitable offers arrive. According to Liverpool.com, Darwin Nunez is already being positioned for a departure. Arne Slot appears intent on rebuilding the attack with younger, more dynamic players.

Several names are in the mix, including Julian Alvarez and Alexander Isak. While Isak would be a dream signing, Newcastle are unlikely to sell—and his price tag is daunting.

Hugo Ekitike has been floated as an option but seems overpriced and underwhelming despite his potential. Alvarez, on the other hand, stands out as a realistic and high-impact target.

The Argentine is proven at the top level, versatile, and still improving. With 26 goals and five assists across all competitions this season, Alvarez offers far more than just goals—he’s also a relentless presser who fits perfectly into Slot’s system.

His development under elite managers like Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone only adds to his appeal. While he won’t come cheap, Alvarez may represent better long-term value than other options on the table.

Slot wants forwards who are not only talented, but consistent and adaptable. A reshaped frontline built around those values could usher in a new era of Liverpool dominance.

Gary Neville names the best thing Arne Slot has done so far at Liverpool as Reds stand on brink of Premier League title

Liverpool put themselves within one win of the Premier League title after Sunday’s result against Leicester City.

Gary Neville names the best thing Arne Slot has done so far at Liverpool as Reds stand on brink of Premier League title

Trent Alexander-Arnold was the hero on the day for the Reds as the 26-year-old right-back made his return from injury off the bench to score the winning goal at the King Power Stadium, sending Leicester down to the Championship and putting Liverpool three points away from the title.

Team MP W D L GD Pts
1 Liverpool 33 24 7 2 44 79
2 Arsenal 33 18 12 3 34 66
3 Newcastle 33 18 5 10 18 59
4 Man City 33 17 7 9 22 58

With Liverpool fans in the away end giving Alexander-Arnold plenty of love, the defender was the man of the hour for the Reds in what was a dream return for the England international, with this Sunday’s clash against Tottenham the game where the title can finally be won.

And Gary Neville has now noted something about Arne Slot’s first year in charge at Liverpool that has flown under the radar.

Arne Slot praised for raising the levels in Liverpool’s squad

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast shortly after full-time, the pundit noted how the overall quality of Liverpool’s squad has improved greatly this season under Slot, with Neville noting Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo’s development.

With Neville praising Conor Bradley’s performance for Liverpool against Leicester, the so-called fringe players with the Reds were key in Slot’s side getting all three points at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, even with the overall performance of the team once again disappointing.

Yet Slot’s squad development has been impressive, with Neville saying: “People will say they’re great, even world-class players, but they can be upset and put off if they’re not with the right type of manager, so he [Arne Slot] has done brilliantly with those players.

“But the players I would classify as being 6/10 players he’s made 7/10 players, that’s the most impressive thing for me, the likes of Gravenberch and Gakpo, I gave Mac Allister Man of the Match today, but I easily could have given it to Gravenberch. He’s done a brilliant job.”

Arne Slot’s player development should excite Liverpool fans next season

Slot’s ability to develop players has been nothing short of incredible for the Liverpool squad this season, with Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister forming arguably the best midfield pivot in the Premier League as Mohamed Salah looks set to enjoy the best individual season in league history.

And heading into next season where Slot and his team are expected to make a number of signings, Liverpool fans should be excited about which players are brought in and what the Dutchman can do to improve their development.

Indeed, Slot has shown that he can take players to the next level with what Jurgen Klopp left behind for the new Liverpool manager, and the former Feyenoord coach will be intent on taking his squad to another new level next season with his own players.

Jurgen Klopp already turned down Arne Slot invites as Liverpool return confirmed

Published

on

Jurgen Klopp is set to return to Liverpool in May and could watch the Reds lift the Premier League title, although he has already turned down invites from Arne Slot

Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp could be back at Anfield to see Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy next month – although the former Reds boss has already turned down invites from Arne Slot this season.

Klopp has not been back on Merseyside since he his role as manager last summer, having been in charge of Liverpool for nearly nine years. After taking an initial break from football, the 57-year-old took up a new role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer in January.

The German is set to return to the area next month, though, as the guest speaker at the LFC Foundation gala dinner at Liverpool Cathedral on Friday, May 23. Klopp was made an honorary ambassador for the club upon his exit, having supported the LFC Foundation throughout his time in charge of the club.

The event falls the day before Liverpool’s final game of the Premier League season when it will take on Crystal Palace at Anfield. According to The Athletic, Klopp has been invited to attend that game, which will see Slot’s side lift the Premier League trophy – assuming they go on to win the title as expected.

It’s not yet confirmed whether Klopp will attend the game, although he has made his intentions to watch Liverpool’s celebrations in person clear.

The former Reds boss’ last appearance at Anfield actually came after his final game in charge, having attended a Taylor Swift concert at the ground with his wife. Klopp has had other opportunities to return, although so far he has turned down his successor’s invitations.

“I wouldn’t mind him coming,” Slot remarked back in February. “I invited him, I think, to the City and Real games, but he told me he has a job and is somewhere else in the world.

“He can be here every single time he wants to come – either to the training ground or the games. He is more than welcome.

“But at this moment he had a job to do and in the first half of the season he had a job to do with his wife, enjoying life. For me, he is always welcome.”

Jurgen Klopp

It seems a good bet Klopp will accept the invitation this time though. The former Liverpool boss has made no secret of his desire to see his former side celebrate their title success, should they complete the job over the remaining seven games this season.

“Yes, the plan is (to be in Liverpool) but not on the bus,” Klopp said recently.

“That’s the idea to be honest, but we will see. I think I will be there for the last game. I didn’t want to go earlier to be honest because I didn’t want to jinx it. So I go there when it’s decided.”

Richard Hughes closing in on £40m Liverpool deal

Published

on

Richard Hughes may be closing in on a £40m deal after the events of this week.

The Liverpool sporting director hasn’t really set the world alight since his arrival at the club. Hughes failed to address the glaring midfield problems last summer.

Meanwhile, he’s also failed to tie down the likes of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to long-term deals, much to the dismay of the club’s supporters.

All three of them will be free to leave Anfield for pastures new at the end of the season if Hughes doesn’t find a way to extend their deals.

And that’s not the only thing he has to worry about this summer. There are going to be massive changes at the club, including as Anfield Watch exclusively revealed a major overhaul in Liverpool’s attack.

But there is some good news. After the events of last week, Hughes might be closer to making a big sale this summer.

Richard Hughes one step closer to £40m transfer deal

In the January transfer window reports emerged that Liverpool were open to selling Harvey Elliott. At the time those reports claimed that the fee Liverpool wanted for Elliott was £40m.

Nobody made a bid for Elliott back then but things have been different for the 21-year-old since.

After his winner against Paris Saint Germain, he now has three goals in his las three Champions League games. And he’s averaging 0.88 goal contributions per 90 for Liverpool in all competitions, only Cody Gakpo and Salah average more for the Reds.

All those numbers plus the hype from scoring the winner against PSG will be music to Hughes’ ears.

At the end of the day, as impressive as Elliott has been when he has played, the fact that he has spent such little time on the pitch shows Arne Slot doesn’t really fancy the midfielder.

Out of Liverpool’s first team players only Federico Chiesa and Tyler Morton have played fewer minutes than Elliott this season. He’s spent just 517 minutes on the pitch and with his 22nd birthday on the horizon these are not the kind of minutes he should be aspiring towards.

Elliott will know his value too and he will understand he might have to move on in order to fulfil his potential.

There’s clearly an exciting talent there. A talent who has on more than one occasion delivered for Liverpool.

But there is just no room for him in this Liverpool team. Elliott simply doesn’t suit Slot’s system and that has been made abundantly clear.

At the same time, he has got a high value. Hughes will be pitching that to prospective buyers. He’ll be showing Elliott’s winner against PSG, the data that highlights his productivity.

Somewhere else Elliott can absolutely be a success and that is why Hughes should be confident that if Elliott continues to make his mark when he does get on the pitch, he will be able to sell him for the price that he wants.

That PSG winner just means Hughes is closing in on his desired £40m deal and that’s a sale that could be of huge benefit to Liverpool’s plans to overhaul the squad this summer.
