Liverpool’s pursuit of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia is about to get ‘interesting.’
The Reds have been locked in a chase for Lavia as they look to soften the blow of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho unexpectedly leaving the club.
As of yet, they’ve been met with frustration. And according to Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth, there could be more ahead. Having seen an initial bid for the Belgian turned down, Sheth says that Liverpool could now face strong competition for Lavia, from Chelsea.
“This is getting interesting because Chelsea still hold a strong interest in the Southampton midfielder,” says the journalist. “Personal terms not expected to be a problem, as they’re not expected to be a problem with Liverpool.
“Chelsea have not made a formal bid yet. Liverpool are the ones making the running as far as the bids are concerned.
Chelsea ready to enter Lavia race
There’s absolutely no time to lose for Liverpool as they look to get this over the line.
Chelsea have been a menace in the transfer window for more than one club over the past year. The Reds can’t allow themselves to become another on the list of teams trumped by Todd Boehly and co.
As the Blues struggle to make headway in their battle to sign Moises Caicedo, Lavia would look like a decent alternative.
The longer Liverpool fail to agree a deal with Southampton for him, the more attractive he’ll become.
Thankfully, there have been positive reports since last night that the Reds are making progress. With a deal now said to be ‘one step away,’ Liverpool fans should remain hopeful.
Nevertheless, it would pay to remain vigilant. Chelsea have already shown no qualms about muscling in on other club’s targets and are just as much in need of a player like Lavia as Liverpool themselves.
Until we see the Belgium international smiling in a Reds shirt, anything could still happen.
