What Liverpool fans did to West Ham stars Lucas Paqueta and Danny Ings in 87th minute at Anfield was pure class.

Another game against Liverpool at Anfield and another defeat for West Ham.

But, as is so often the case for Hammers teams on the road at Liverpool down the years, they could – and perhaps should – have come away with more.

The Premier League clash between Liverpool and West Ham was bizarrely delayed for five minutes moments before kick-off.

But West Ham started the game very brightly indeed. Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio had brilliant chances to give the visitors the lead.

But they went begging and Liverpool got themselves in front after Nayef Aguerd gave away a penalty with a laboured trip on Mo Salah who duly converted from the spot.

The Hammers should have had the chance to get themselves on the scoresheet after a stonewall Reds foul on Jarrod Bowen in the box.

Video shows West Ham were inexplicably denied a clear penalty for a Liverpool foul on the Prague hero.

West Ham were deservedly level just before half-time, though, when Bowen stooped to score a wonderful diving header from a Vladimir Coufal cross.

The game got away from West Ham in the second half as Liverpool took advantage of some poor Hammers defending to seal a 3-1 win.

One player who did not deserve to be on the losing side was West Ham’s Brazilian magnifico Lucas Paqueta.

The midfielder oozed class throughout and had the Liverpool players on strings. He also got stuck in, winning the ball more than any other player on the pitch.

It was just a shame he was required to do most of his work so deep due to West Ham’s understandably cautious approach with Salah down that side.

Paqueta was a box of tricks throughout and Liverpool’s players could not get near him. Whether he was slipping the ball between their legs or flicking it over their heads, he was a class apart.

On multiple occasions as many as three Liverpool players were required to contain Paqueta, often with no other option than to foul him.

It’s fair to say he impressed everyone from the commentators – who waxed lyrical about his performance – to the crowd.

And what Liverpool fans did to West Ham stars Paqueta and Danny Ings in 87th minute at Anfield was pure class.

Paqueta had run himself into the ground when he was substituted for ex Liverpool striker Ings in the 87th minute.

And the Anfield faithful gave Paqueta a standing ovation as he left the pitch to which the Brazilian held his hand aloft in thanks.

Liverpool fans continued to stand to applaud their former player Ings too as he entered the field.

Credit where credit is due to the Anfield crowd

Anfield may be massively over-hyped by the media.

But the Liverpool supporters, like West Ham fans, appreciate good football and know a top player when they see one.

They certainly witnessed that in Paqueta’s dazzing display.

Credit where it is due to the home support for giving the Hammers favourite a standing ovation. It is an increasingly rare occurrence due to the tribalistic nature of the modern game.

And the applause was undoubtedly afforded to the West Ham duo given Liverpool knew they had the win sewn up at that stage.
