Jurgen Klopp suggests 26-year-old Liverpool player was actually injured for last night’s game

Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Liverpool had a slight injury issue ahead of last night’s win over Leicester City.

The Reds yet again came from behind to yet again win 3-1 at Anfield. It’s their fourth victory by the same scoreline in a row, and the third time they’ve had to come from behind to get it.

Despite the slow start though, there were plenty of positives for Klopp to take in. And speaking in his post-match press conference last night, the Liverpool manager reeled those off, including a special mention for match-winner Dominik Szoboszlai.

But unfortunately there was a nugget of slightly concerning news in there from the boss. Commenting on his decision to use Curtis Jones at right-back, Jurgen admitted it was a little out of necessity. Joe Gomez, it seems, has a knock.

“We couldn’t play Stefan [Bajcetic] long, we have to be careful with him,” began the German.

“Joey [Gomez] will be OK for the weekend but was not OK for today. For Trent [Alexander-Arnold] it is too early. So I needed to find solutions and Curtis was always in my mind as a potential solution there.”

Good news that the 26-year-old looks set to be back for the Tottenham match on Sunday, but a slight concern all the same.

Gomez ruled out of Leicester game

By the sounds of things the decision to leave Gomez out of the squad last night was simply precautionary. But given the England international’s injury history, there may be some cause for worry.

Hopefully not, as Gomez has started the season like a man with a point to prove.

Having stepped in at both centre-back and right-back so far, the former Charlton youngster has looked back to his best.

It’s still early days of course, but if Gomez can keep this kind of form up, he could well soon be back in the England set-up. Whether that happens or not though will largely depend on how much he’s playing for Liverpool.

With Alexander-Arnold expected to be back for Sunday’s trip to London, Gomez looks set to be relieved of his right-back duties imminently. If he gets the start at centre-back or not may now depend on his fitness.

It was slightly surprising to see Ibrahima Konate at the back last night, and that would suggest that either Joel Matip or Gomez are being readied for Sunday.

If he’s back in time, it would be great to see Liverpool’s No.2 given the chance to go again. Speedy recovery, Joe.
