Craig Burley has questioned the drop in form of Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool and Holland.

Once regarded as the best centre-back in the world, Virgil van Dijk can no longer claim to have that tag.

Yes, the 32-year-old still has the reputation, but the form is no longer there and it hasn’t been for a while, especially over a consistent basis for Liverpool.

That was touched upon by Craig Burley who added that Liverpool’s ‘talisman’ at the back is now ‘starting to be questioned by club and country’, as he told ESPN.

During Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Brighton, Virgil van Dijk ran into trouble, once again, whilst trying to play out from the back with his teammate getting dispossessed and the opponent then going on to score.

And in the colours of his country, Dutch legend Marco van Basten has previously let rip at his leadership qualities.‘STARTING TO BE QUESTIONED BY CLUB & COUNTRY’: PUNDIT SAYS LIVERPOOL ‘TALISMAN’ IS DECLINING

Virgil van Dijk’s decline

“Last year, he was smarting a little at the criticism that came his way and he got a bit techy in some of the interviews,” said Burley.

“He has had a lot of praise, and rightly so. But It’s not just in England where they have been looking at him and saying ‘Are you leading this team like you were?’

“But in Holland also, he has had a lot of ex-players very vocal about his leadership skills for his country. Not suggesting that everything that happens at Liverpool or Holland is all his fault.

“But he the talisman he has become, he is starting to be questioned for club and country. One of the balls he played to Mac Allister. The camera panned straight to Mac Allister after the goal.”

It’s the issue of van Dijk just not looking like the same player that bossed teams around prior to his ACL injury against Everton.

Many feel that the ice-cool defender is no longer that player and it has taken an edge out of his game.

It hasn’t helped that those around him have also gone backwards, with Liverpool now entering a new era under Jurgen Klopp.
