‘I’D BE SHOCKED’: PAUL MERSON SAYS £200,000-A-WEEK PLAYER WILL LEAVE LIVERPOOL FOR SURE

One of the players who has struggled to make an impact at Liverpool in recent years is Thiago Alcantara.

Much was expected of Thiago Alcantara when he joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020.

The £20 million transfer fee that Liverpool paid for the former Barcelona star was also supposed to be a bargain.

However, Thiago has not been a success at Liverpool at all.

Persistent injury problems have really affected the 32-year-old’s time at Liverpool.

There have been occasions when the Spanish midfielder has done well when he has played, but he simply cannot get a run in the team.

Paul Merson on Thiago Alcantara future at Liverpool

Thiago is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that the Merseyside club will not hand him a new contract and will offload him in the summer of 2024.

Merson told SportKeeda: “Thiago Alcantara has been incredibly unlucky with injuries, but I’d be shocked if he stayed at Liverpool beyond this season.

“The Reds are unlikely to offload him in January because he’s still a top player when he’s fit, but at the end of the season, I can see him moving on as a free agent.”

My View: No future at Liverpool for Thiago Alcantara

I do not think that Thiago Alcantara has a future at Liverpool.

Thiago is 32 now and is past his prime.

I think that Thiago will not get back to his best.

The former Barcelona star’s best years were at Bayern Munich.

During his time at Liverpool so far, Thiago has made 67 appearances in the Premier League.

The £200,000-a-week (Spotrac) midfielder has scored two goals and given four assists in those games.

Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League table at the moment with 20 points from nine matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are three points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds are also doing well in the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool are going strong at the moment, and they are doing well without Thiago in the team.
