Jamie Carragher praises surprise Liverpool tactical decision vs Luton

Jamie Carragher has praised Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start Joe Gomez at left-back today in Liverpool’s away trip to Luton Town.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, the Anfield legend lauded the tactical choice to start the English defender in the left-back position over Kostas Tsimikas.

Carragher said: “I think it’s a sensible one given Luton’s at set-pieces. It also means Liverpool are set as a back-three, with Trent cutting in I think it makes a lot of sense.”

Gomez has impressed in parts this season and did serve as a good replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold last month, and the former Charlton Athletic man has impressed again today.

Liverpool’s trip to Luton will no doubt be one of the more interesting away trips the Reds make this season given the nature of the Hatters’ home ground.

And Gomez’s performance today could give Klopp another option in the defence, with the 26-year-old evolving into a player who can provide good short-term cover anywhere along the back.

Defensive versatility can turn an average player into a valuable one in the right team, and Gomez could now be just that for Liverpool.

The defender impressed earlier this season in the right-back position, and Gomez’s winning plaudits from Klopp today could hint towards the English defender replacing Tsimkas at left-back.

Indeed, quality in defence will be what keeps Liverpool’s title bid alive this season, and Gomez performing at left-back is only a good thing for the Reds.
