Jamie Carragher names two transfers Liverpool must complete to challenge for Premier League title

The former Liverpool star doesn’t believe his old club is ready to win the league just yet

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool need to recruit a ‘top-class defender’ and a midfielder if they are to compete for the Premier League title.

A stoppage-time header from Luis Diaz rescued the Reds a point against Luton Town on Sunday evening. Tahith Chong had earlier put the hosts ahead.

The result leaves Liverpool three points behind leaders Manchester City, although Tottenham Hotspur could move back to the top of the table with a win over Chelsea on Monday night.

But despite the Reds being within touching distance of City, Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports following the draw at Kenilworth Road, doesn’t believe his old club is ready to win the league just yet.

He said: “I think what Liverpool have had in the last 18 months, and they are a lot better at it this season, is they still are not as good as Manchester City at stopping counter-attacks.

“That’s what I would say. People always think of Liverpool on how they plan about pressing from the front.

“But Liverpool are a team who, after a long time, dominate possession and have a lot of the ball, but they’re quite as good as Manchester City on the ball; there’s more turnover and lose the ball and opponents do seem to find space.

“But I’d say that the big thing is Liverpool also in midfield has improved to what we saw last season, but they still haven’t got a top-holding midfield player. (Alexis) Mac Allister is not a holding midfield player; he is good on the ball in terms of receiving, but in terms of defensively, he finds it really tough and lacks a little bit of pace, and I think they can improve there. I think in the back four, they started with Joe Gomez at left-back instead of (Kostas) Tsimikas, and I think Liverpool could probably do with a player in that position probably on the other side at right back and release Trent (Alexander-Arnold) maybe into midfield.

“So, I think Liverpool are not ready to win the league again. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters know that right now that they want to get back in the top four, but in terms of challenging again, maybe another midfield player and a top-class defender.”
