Erling Haaland to be fined and suspended - otherwise Liverpool should ask questions

Manchester City players showed their frustration with Simon Hooper’s decision in their draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday

Manchester City have been charged by the Football Association after a controversial incident in their draw with Tottenham Hotspur – but Erling Haaland has escaped punishment for his tirade at the referee.

Liverpool’s title rivals were forced to settle for a draw with Spurs, following Dejan Kulusevski’s late equaliser at the Etihad. However, it was a decision by referee Simon Hooper in added time that captured the most attention, despite the end-to-end nature of the game.

Hooper had initially allowed play to go on after a foul on Haaland, The striker recovered to play a pass to Jack Grealish, who looked to be bearing down on goal, before the referee called the game to a halt and awarded the free-kick, much to the disbelief of many Man City players.

The FA have charged Man City for “failing to ensure their players behaved in a proper manner” during the incident in added time. It is not yet known whether City will appeal the charge.

Striker Haaland was one of the more vocal City players to vent his frustrations at Hooper’s decision and was visibly irritated when the game resumed. After the final whistle, Haaland stormed down the tunnel and took to social media, writing “WTF”. However, the FA have confirmed that no further action will be taken against Haaland for his comment as it was deemed not to have breached social media rules.

Liverpool fans may well be interested to see how the case against City unfolds, given they know all about individual charges following Virgil van Dijk’s suspension after his red card against Newcastle United earlier this season. The Reds captain had an extra game added to his ban after arguing with the referee and refusing to leave the field, plus a £100,000 fine for improper conduct.
