Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay is currently on loan at Preston North End but missed their most recent game after testing positive for Covid-19

Liverpool defender Calvin Ramsay has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Scotland international is currently on loan at Preston North End, but sat out their 0-0 draw with Norwich City on Saturday. Having only made his Lilywhites debut at the end of last month after a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury, there was inevitably concern at his absence from the travelling matchday squad to Carrow Road.
But North End boss Ryan Lowe allayed any fears after the final whistle, revealing that Ramsay’s absence was because of illness after he had tested positive for Covid-19.

“He’s got Covid,” said Lowe post-match. “I don’t know what the crack is. There’s a bit of it flying around isn’t there?

“He wasn’t feeling well and we had to make sure we just kept him away. There was no point him travelling with us. So yeah, he’s not well.”

It remains to be seen if Ramsay will recover in time to face Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old has been limited to just two appearances for Preston since joining the club on loan in the summer, having suffered a setback when returning after knee surgery.

An initial £4m signing for Liverpool from Aberdeen in the summer of 2022, Ramsay was also limited to just two appearances during his first season at Anfield after finding himself instantly sidelined when two stress fractures were discovered in the young defender’s back during his Reds medical.

He would then be ruled out for the rest of the season the following February after undergoing knee surgery, with such an injury ultimately keeping him sidelined until last month.

Having come through 87 minutes unscathed when handed his full Preston debut against Queens Park Ranger on Friday 1 December, the young Scot will be cursing the timing of catching Covid. However, with a frantic festive period looming, Ramsay will be itching to get back and make up for lost time as he looks to gain valuable senior experience during his loan spell away from Liverpool.
