BEYOND GUESSING; Paul Merson brutal prediction for Liverpool vs Man Utd at Anfield says it all

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has dropped a clear-cut prediction for Manchester United’s Premier League showdown with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s men crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday after a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and United face a huge test this weekend.

The United manager won’t have captain Bruno Fernandes in his starting XI, with the midfielder suspended after he was booked in the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

Harry Maguire, who has seen a remarkable career resurgence this season, could also be a doubt for the Liverpool clash after he limped off in the first half against Bayern.

Ten Hag currently has a whopping 13 ‘potential absentees’ for the trip to Anfield, with the former Ajax boss facing mounting pressure over United’s season so far.

Merson’s prediction for United vs Liverpool

Liverpool have been in impressive form in the Premier League this season and are currently top of the table, with the Reds one point clear of Arsenal in the title race.

United, on the other hand, are currently sixth in the league table and are six points off the Premier League top four ahead of the Liverpool clash at Anfield.

Speaking in his column for Sportskeeda, Merson believes that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side will come out on top and predicted a 3-0 scoreline for the Reds.

The Sky Sports pundit added that he expects Liverpool to “rip them to shreds,” despite the likes of Alexis Mac Allister being a “massive injury doubt.”

“I expect Liverpool to rip them to shreds, so I’m going for a 3-0 home win,” Merson wrote.

“Alexis Mac Allister is a massive injury doubt, but Jurgen Klopp has a few options to choose from in midfield.

“Wataru Endo has played a few games recently and Harvey Elliott’s cameos have been impressive, but I think Curtis Jones is someone who knows how big this game is, so I expect him to start at Anfield.”

All eyes on Ten Hag for United’s clash with Liverpool

Merson said that he was “not worried in the slightest” about his prediction for Liverpool vs United, which highlights the challenge awaiting Ten Hag.

Ten Hag has been frustrated with United’s lack of consistency this season and the Dutchman will arrive at Anfield on the back of his side’s Champions League exit.

United have had a poor record at Anfield in recent seasons and Klopp’s Liverpool side are the overwhelming favourites going into the Premier League contest.

Merson insisted that he does not “expect anything” from United in the match and even claimed that Ten Hag will be “throwing players onto the pitch.”

Speaking in his column, he said: “As for Manchester United’s team, I think Ten Hag will just be throwing players onto the pitch.

“I don’t expect anything from Manchester United as they simply haven’t been good enough this season.

“Liverpool, on the other hand, are the league leaders and with games coming thick and fast in the festive period, they absolutely have to win this one, particularly with the game against Arsenal on the horizon.”
