Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool completely ‘understand’ something about Manchester United now

Trent Alexander-Arnold has previewed Liverpool’s big game against Manchester United tomorrow.

The Reds go into the game as heavy favourites, with United coming off the back of a dismal couple of results.

Nevertheless, Liverpool shouldn’t be getting carried away with themselves. They may be top of the table, but Erik ten Hag’s side have the quality to spring a surprise.

And speaking to beIN SPORTS ahead of Sunday’s match, Alexander-Arnold has claimed that having been in their position before, he and his Liverpool teammates ‘understand’ United’s mentality.

“We know how much it would mean to them and their season,” said the 25-year-old. “What better way to kickstart your season, get that belief again, then going to Anfield and getting a result. We understand what their mentality is as ours would be going to their place. You get a result there and it sets the tone for yourselves and you get that belief.

“We need to match that and we need to execute our game plan. I’m sure we’ll be able to do that, but it’s not going to be an easy walk in the park just because they’ve had a couple of bad results. The game’s still the game.”

Trent wary of United backlash

In the lead up to the game at Anfield, there have been plenty of predictions of a landslide result for Liverpool.

The fact that the Reds have beaten their old rivals 4-0, 5-0 and 7-0 in recent years means that expectation of another big scoreline has heightened.

However, United also beat Liverpool recently. With the Reds under-par at Old Trafford in August last year, they were dispatched 2-1.

Ten Hag’s team may be injury-riddled and low on confidence, but you just never know what can happen in football.

As a result, it’s nice to hear Trent’s attitude here. Clearly, Liverpool aren’t going to be taking Man U lightly based on the scorelines of recent times. That’s absolutely the right approach.

If United do pull an unlikely win from the bag, then it really would kickstart their campaign.

They’d reduce the gap to Liverpool to seven points and would feel that they could continue to climb the table. Alexander-Arnold and co can’t let that happen.

As a Scouser himself, the vice-captain obviously understands the heat in this particular rivalry. But it’s nice to see him using his head as well as his heart here. Come on Liverpool!
