Disbelief over what ‘naughty’ Fulham star did against Liverpool

Former Liverpool and Chelsea stars were left in disbelief at the quality finish from Fulham centre-back Issa Diop against the Reds at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Marco Silva’s side couldn’t do enough to defeat an in-form Liverpool side and overturn the 1-0 loss sustained at Anfield earlier this month but there were positives for the London outfit. One of the Fulham moments that won plaudits was the goal scored by defender Diop in the second half, which prompted a pile-on of pressure from the home side.

The goal was made by substitute Harry Wilson, who drove in from the left and whipped a ball into the near post. It was the Frenchman who made a darting run to meet the pass, having stayed in the box following a set piece, to score his first goal of the season.

Reacting to that moment on Sky Sports after the game, West Ham star Michail Antonio said: “What I’m definitely saying is when Harry Wilson came on, he changed the game. He brought some energy in, he sent Bradley to the shops and then found Issa. It’s deflected up so the reaction is great. It’s instinctive, like he’s been there his whole life. His movement – he’s taken a step back and then driven into the space across Virgil. The movement was quality.”

Those thoughts were echoed by former Fulham and Reading man Steve Sidwell and ex Reds striker Daniel Sturridge, who were also on punditry duty for the broadcaster.
Sidwell said: “Diop’s in there, he knows it’s going to come at him at pace and it’s about what part of the body can he get on it. He sees it really late and it’s the most deft of touches from his thigh. It’s a great finish from the centre half!”
Sturridge added: “When we play five-a-side, attack vs defence. The defenders seem to know the moves, what to do against defenders. He knows, make sure I get across the front and the timing. The finish – off the knee, off the thigh, it’s just naughty.”
