Jurgen Klopp shares Marco Silva comments that helped inspire Liverpool at Fulham

The Liverpool boss spoke about the desire of his team after their 3-2 aggregate win over Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

Jurgen Klopp praised the desire of his Liverpool team after they secured a record 14th League Cup final appearance.

The Reds withstood a late Fulham charge after Issa Diop equalised Luis Diaz’s early opener to secure a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage in their semi-final second leg and progress 3-2 on aggregate on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool will now face Chelsea at Wembley on February 25 in a rerun of the final of two years ago, which the Reds won on penalties.

And Klopp was delighted with the manner in which his team, missing seven regular starters, matched the Cottagers’ commitment to continue challenging on four fronts.

“I heard Marco Silva’s press conference before the game and he was saying it’s the most important game of the season for them,” said the Liverpool boss. “I told the boys I know what it means to us, but we have to show it to the outside world that we want it as much as they do. And I saw that.

“It was just a good cup game. Anyone who expected we would turn up and show our quality and it would be a walk in the park doesn’t understand the game and doesn’t understand the importance of the occasion. Both teams really wanted to go to Wembley. We qualified, that’s all we could wish for.

“But we all know it’s Chelsea and they probably want to put history right after playing us twice two years ago (and losing in both cup finals).”

Liverpool had come from behind to win the first leg 2-1 at Anfield a fortnight ago with Cody Gakpo’s winner ultimately proving the difference between the teams.

And Klopp added: “Everybody would say they probably prefer to play the second game at home, but we played the home game first and won 2-1, and we’ve been long enough in the business to know that’s nothing at half-time.

“You would expect that Fulham came out of the blocks flying. I liked our first 30 minutes really a lot. We were just ready for this game. That’s the most important thing.

“We could have scored a second goal and then the game opens up slightly. At half-time we wanted to play more football and control the game more and we should have scored in the second half with two counter-attacks. We could have put the game to bed and didn’t, then it’s 1-1 and Harry Wilson – another Liverpool boy in a really good moment to be honest (who provided the assist) – and then we had to bring it over the line.

“We did. It feels great, we are really happy. The boys wanted it, the boys got it and now we are looking forward to Wembley definitely.”

Liverpool fans unfurled a banner stating “Imagine Being Us” after the final whistle. Klopp, though, is focused on the busy schedule that continues with the FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Championship side Norwich City on Sunday.

“I can tell you I’m completely fine the fans feel it like that,” he said. “I’m really happy and pleased for them but we play in four days against Norwich, that’s my problem. And then three days after that we play Chelsea and then Arsenal.

“Imagine being us and having to play all the games we have to play! That’s not as enjoyable as watching it but it’s fine, absolutely fine.”
