‘I consider him my dad’ – Jurgen Klopp bombshell exit news reduced former Liverpool man to tears

Jurgen Klopp last week announced that he would step down from his position as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.

Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has revealed he was left with ‘tears in his eyes’ following the news that Jurgen Klopp would leave his old club at the end of the season.

The Guinean departed the Reds during the summer, as he returned to the Bundesliga after penning terms with Werder Bremen. Keita was part of the squads that won the Champions League and Premier League, but his time on Merseyside was plagued by injuries.

On Friday, Klopp revealed that he would be stepping down from his post in the Anfield dugout after nine years at the end of the season. Explaining his decision, the German cited that he is ‘running out of energy’, but also insisted that the remainder of the season will not be a ‘farewell tour’.

Reacting to the news, Keita described Klopp like a ‘father’ figure after he treated him like a son following his £48million move to Anfield from RB Leipzig in 2018.

“I’m not on the (social media) networks but when they told me, I had tears in my eyes,” he told RMC Sport. “He took me to Liverpool as his son and I consider him my dad. I wish him the best for the rest of his life.

“I’ll try to write to him afterwards. Such is life, I bumped into him and I wasn’t disappointed. We got trophies.”

Virgil van Dijk was one of the first Liverpool players to speak out over the shock announcement. The Dutchman admitted that it was a struggle to accept the impending exit, while Andy Robertson expressed his surprise at Klopp’s decision, but noted that the successful manager wouldn’t do anything ‘rash’.
