Luis Garcia sends Xabi Alonso Liverpool warning as surprise Steven Gerrard claim made

Former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia has warned Xabi Alonso to take his time before making the next step in his coaching career.

Alonso is currently the favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield at the end of the current season, which would see the Spaniard return to the club he left as a player in 2009 to sign for Real Madrid. The 42-year-old has caught the attention of many with the job he is doing at Bayer Leverkusen, who currently lead the way in the Bundesliga standings having not lost a league game this term.

When Alonso took over the German club in October 2022, they were in the relegation zone. Despite this impressive achievement, there are fears among some Liverpool supporters that a move to Merseyside could come too soon for the Spaniard.

Sharing a similar opinion, Garcia told CBS: “Sometimes, rushing things is not very good. I’m not saying Xabi is not ready to handle high levels because you have seen what he has done at Leverkusen.

“There have been talks and rumours about him leaving for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich but, in the end, I like the way Xabi has managed his career and making it step by step. I don’t want to bring Xabi right after Jurgen Klopp because the legacy Jurgen has left is so big that it is going to be very difficult to match it.

“Everyone is going to expect from Xabi not even a transition period, they want to deliver the best of the best and to be challenging for every trophy. That’s not easy. I would like to see Xabi one day arrive in Liverpool, with all the mistakes he has to continue making, because we have to say he is just starting his career.”

Garcia, a former Liverpool team-mate of the Leverkusen coach, was then asked who he would rather see in the Anfield dug-out next season out of Steven Gerrard and Alonso and delivered an intriguing response. “If there is an option right now, I would leave Xabi waiting for his moment because I think he is doing a great job,” he added. “I would take Steven Gerrard and place him in Liverpool. I think his personality would match the style of play of Liverpool at the moment.”
