Richard Keys fires blunt warning to Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool decision

Latest Liverpool news and gossip as Richard Keys sends a warning to Jurgen Klopp following his decision to step down from his role as Reds boss at the end of the season.

Richard Keys has warned Jurgen Klopp that he may “regret” leaving his role as Liverpool manager.

Klopp stunned the world of football last week when he announced that he would be stepping down from his role at Anfield. The 56-year-old has been in charge of the Reds since October 2015 and has won seven major trophies so far.

Ever since the announcement, there has been speculation over who could be Klopp’s successor in the Anfield dugout. Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen is the early favourite with the bookmakers, while the likes of Ruben Amorim (Sporting CP), Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton) and Julian Nagelsmann (Germany national team) have also been linked with the future vacancy.

One of the reasons Klopp gave for his impending departure is that he is “running out of energy”, as Liverpool remain in the race for four major trophies in the second half of the season. Now the Reds boss has been sent a warning by Keys over his decision.

Keys argued that legendary former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, who resigned from his role back in 1974, regretted leaving Anfield when he did. Keys believes that Klopp could have similar feelings in deciding to leave the club in the summer.

“I would add this as a word of warning to Jurgen Klopp,” Keys told beIN SPORTS. “He’s five years young – Shankly went at 61 [years old], Klopp is 56.

“Bill Shankly regretted leaving Liverpool every day for the remainder of his life once he had gone – every day.

“It gnawed away at him and he knew he shouldn’t have done it.”
