Arsenal legend Paul Merson revealed which Liverpool player he’d pick in his team ‘every day of the week’ – despite things not always happening to plan for him.

Paul Merson revealed that if he could have a Liverpool player in his team, he’d take Darwin Nunez ‘every day of the week.’

Merson was full of praise for Liverpool’s unorthodox striker ahead of the Reds’ trip to Arsenal on Sunday in a top of the table clash. Jurgen Klopp’s side headed to the Emirates five points clear of Arsenal and Manchester City.

But despite the Uruguayan registering five goal involvements in his last four Premier League games, Klopp opted to leave him on the bench, something that would’ve baffled Merson given the former Gunner’s pre-match comments.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “Any time, and I say that because he doesn’t hide. He never hides. The biggest compliment I can give him – people miss chances and you see them never getting in the box. The balls go down the wing and they’re on the edge of the box waiting for a pull-back.

“Even there when he’s already hit the post three times and missed a penalty, he’s still getting in there for that header. He’s the one who’s bursting a gut to get in there. You hope it works for him.

“For me, he gets in my team every day of the week because he is an absolute handful. He’s willing to run without the ball, he makes runs, he’s a team player. For me, I hope it clicks for him.

“I say that I hope it clicks for me, he’s got 11 goals and playing for a team going for the quadruple. He’s doing something right, I’m a big fan of his. Takes a lot of character not to hide and he does never hide.”

Merson added that his workload off the ball makes him the ideal team-mate for those attempting to supply him, he added: “He’s a midfield player’s dream because he spreads the game out, the defenders have to drop off and Mac Allister gets more time on the ball.

“Mac Allister wants time on the ball, he doesn’t want someone tight on him, give him time on the ball, and getting Trent Alexander-Arnold come in there, they’ll spray it all over the pitch; so he’s a massive piece for them, massive.”
