Gabriel’s nightmare own goal silences Arsenal crowd as Liverpool force mad lucky leveller

Liverpool somehow found themselves level in a first-half they were dominated in and without a shot on target after Gabriel Magalhaes scored the most bizarre of own goals.

Gabriel Magalhaes scored the most bizarre own goal to gift Liverpool an equaliser at the end of the first-half in their Premier League clash on Sunday.

An opening 45 minutes dominated by Arsenal saw them take the lead after just 14 minutes when Bukayo Saka arrived on the spot to slot into an empty net and save Kai Havertz’s blushes after the German shot straight at Alisson, despite being clean through.

Arsenal continued to press the Reds and wasted chances to double their advantage. And they were soon left to rue their wastefulness when Liverpool equalised in the third minute of first-half added time.

A rare foray forward from Liverpool looked for all the world to be dealt with by the Arsenal backline. A dinked ball over the top towards Luis Diaz was unable to be controlled by the Colombian in the penalty box, and the danger seemed to have passed.

William Saliba was able to get his body between Diaz and the ball, which slowly rolled back towards David Raya; however, the keeper never came for it and Diaz was able to hook a hopeful ball across the six-yard box.

Diaz’s cross struck the arm of Gabriel, who in attempting to move his arm behind his body, knocked the ball goalwards. A desperate attempt from the Brazilian to clear his unfortunate touch off the goal line failed and Diaz wheeled away to celebrate the messiest of goals.

Arsenal’s calamitous defending gifted Liverpool a route back into the game and thoughts immediately were drawn to the FA Cup third round tie between the two, in which Arsenal failed to make similar early dominance count, eventually being beaten 2-0.
