‘Phenomenal’ Liverpool player missed training yesterday after being subbed off against Arsenal

Liverpool had some more bad injury news to contend with yesterday as Thiago Alcantara succumbed to a new fitness issue.

Thiago’s return was perhaps the only positive to be taken from Sunday’s disappointing defeat against Arsenal. Now even that ray of light has been extinguished for Reds supporters.

But as Liverpool know only too well in terms of injuries, when it rains it tends to pour. As well as Thiago, Dominik Szoboszlai is also set to miss tomorrow’s game against Burnley with a hamstring problem.

And now, according to the Liverpool ECHO, Jurgen Klopp might just have another problem, too. They report that Joe Gomez was not spotted during Thursday’s pre-Burnley training session.

Having started the last 10 games, Gomez has become an important player for Klopp over recent months. However, with his absence yesterday being described as ‘unexpected,’ it looks unlikely that the 26-year-old will go again tomorrow.

No further details or speculation are given about what kept Gomez away. It is noted that he was substituted late on against Arsenal, but no link has been made just yet. Let’s see what Jurgen reports in his press conference today.

Gomez misses training

Gomez being injured now would be a real blow to Liverpool. As Andy Robertson detailed in an interview with liverpoolfc.com yesterday, the defender has been ‘phenomenal’ lately.

With Robertson now returning, the former Charlton youngster is thankfully no longer needed to fill in at left-back.

However, Klopp has been presented with another issue tomorrow, with Ibrahima Konate suspended for the match at Anfield. Someone will have to step in at centre-back. That would probably have been Joe.

As he has midfielders missing, the manager may have been planning to push Trent Alexander-Arnold into the middle, and drop Gomez in at right-back, too. But with Conor Bradley also still sitting out, that now looks like it won’t be an option either.

As a result, Klopp looks like he may essentially have just four players to fill the four slots in defence. Unless Joe magically reappears tomorrow, it’ll be Trent, Jarell Quansah, Virgil van Dijk and Robertson.

Really, that’s still three quarters of the boss’ preferred defence. It also shouldn’t be a huge problem against Burnley regardless. If anything should happen to any one of the four though, Liverpool might have a problem.

Given his injury history, it was always a slight risk to ask Gomez to keep going again over the winter.

He really held up when Liverpool needed him, but it does appear to have taken its toll. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious.
