Explained: Why Alisson Becker isn’t in Liverpool squad for Burnley Premier League clash

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is absent from the squad for his team’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Anfield on Saturday.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Brazilian shot stopper was absent from the starting XI and the bench as Caoimhin Kelleher took his place between the posts for the afternoon showdown. The Premier League side confirmed that Alisson and defender Joe Gomez are out with illness after Jurgen Klopp revealed a few players were struggling with the flu.

WHAT KLOPP SAID

Klopp told reporters: “We have Ibou [Konate] not available [through suspension], a little bit of fighting a little bit with a flu thing in the squad, so we have to see who in the end is available so that is all not cool but in the end – we will have 11 players and we will go for it.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp was forced to make five changes to the starting XI that lost to Arsenal in their previous game, with Darwin Nunez, Andy Robertson and Jarell Quansah all getting the nod, while Wataru Endo plays after returning from the Asian Cup. The absence of Alisson will cause some concern among Reds fans, though, as they hope to recover from last week’s loss and return to the top of the Premier League.

WHAT NEXT FOR ALISSON?

Alisson will watch on as his side look to secure three points against relegation-threatened Burnley. Klopp will hope to have him and Gomez available for selection for the next game against Brentford on February 17.
