No one is talking about 39-year-old manager who could be even better than Xabi Alonso for Liverpool

Xabi Alonso is of course the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. It’s easy to see why for several factors.

The 42-year-old is doing a fantastic job in the Bundesliga. He’s taken Bayer Leverkusen from fighting against relegation to competing for the title in the space of just a season and a half.

On top of that, he’s got the affiliation with Liverpool already. Having played for many years at Anfield – the club is close to his heart. And he is close to Liverpool supporters’ hearts. Especially since Alonso played a key role in the success of Istanbul.

Already a cult hero, and an exciting young manager, it’s easy to see why we as Liverpool fans are all having tunnel vision right now. However, it’s important to note Alonso is not the only candidate, and there might be someone else who could be even better.

Ruben Amorim could be a smart choice for Liverpool

Ruben Amorim is also another manager on Liverpool’s radar. The 39-year-old may not have as alluring of a name as Alonso to Liverpool ears. However, he’s already got more experience coaching in the top-flight than Alonso.

Amorim has worked as a manager in Portuguese’s top flight since 2019. He first did wonders with Braga’s B team before moving onto the first team. There Amorim won the cup with Braga, and in his nine league games in charge he didn’t lose a single game helping his side to beat Benfica away from home for the first time in 65 years.

That caught the attention of Sporting, who brought Amorim in as the club’s head-coach just a few months into his stint at Braga. In his first full season in charge of Sporting, he won the league title and the Portuguese Cup.

He then went onto lift the Portuguese Cup and Super Cup in his second season. His third season in charge, was full of upheaval last season. However, Amorim has bounced back again this season and his Sporting CP side look on course to be in with a chance of winning the league again. They’re currently level on points with Benfica – but with a game in hand.

Amorim’s track-record is equally as impressive as Alonso’s. Despite being younger than the former Liverpool man, Amorim has more experience managing in the top-flight. He plays an attractive brand of football, and could potentially even be a smarter appointment for Liverpool. One who nobody is talking about right now with all the focus shifted on Alonso.
