Jurgen Klopp says 20-year-old Liverpool gem has been ‘absolutely exceptional’ in training

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken highly about Harvey Elliott ahead of the Reds’ upcoming Premier League fixture.

The Liverpool boss, speaking at his pre-match press conference, also made it clear that the 20-year-old will be much more than a ‘super-sub’ in future.

Elliott has played in all but four Premier League matches this term for Liverpool, regularly coming off the bench and making a big impact for the Reds.

For instance, he replaced the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold at half-time in last week’s meeting with Burnley, and set up two goals to help Liverpool to a 3-1 victory.

Despite featuring regularly in the Premier League, he has only made two starts for Klopp‘s Reds this term, hence the tag of ‘super-sub’.

Liverpool ace Harvey Elliott has ‘a lot of potential’

When asked whether Elliott was knocking on the door and asking about more starts, Klopp replied, as per BBC Sport: “No, Harvey is not doing that, but we have had talks anyway.

“With Harvey you forget how young he is. He’s had injuries. Young players go through different moments in the early days of their career – flying, not flying, working hard – not him, but all young players in general. It’s completely normal.

“Harvey has been incredibly important and I’m sure he knows that. Is it that he wishes to start every game? Yes. probably, but when he has come on he is brilliant, when he has started it’s not the same.

“It’s not a problem. He’s young – it’s not like for the rest of his career he’ll be a ‘super-sub’ or what the public call him.

“Learn the game, understand your game, use your skillset to get better and better. There is a lot he is doing well and there is more he can do.

“Of course there is a lot of potential in him. He is a joy to work with. It is absolutely exceptional how he has trained this week.

“You can see the best thing to inject in a player is confidence and that comes with goals and assists.”

Harvey Elliott has plenty of time to become a regular Liverpool starter

It’s good to hear Klopp speak so highly of Elliott, and it’s not as though he hasn’t been playing at all. Admittedly, it would be better to start all or most of the time, but still he’s up against strong competition at Liverpool.

At the same time, the Reds are fighting on four fronts at present, so there’ll be plenty of time for Elliott to impress and feature more often, potentially in the starting XI too.

Elliott’s just 20 years old, so he’s got his whole career ahead of him, not to mention a very high ceiling that he’s likely nowhere near at present. He can become so much better, and it’ll be exciting to see him develop further.
