Klopp sent a message to the England manager.

Jurgen Klopp called out England boss Gareth Southgate after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Liverpool and City played out a pulsating draw at Anfield on Sunday, a result that leaves the Premier League title race wide open.

Klopp’s side weathered an early storm from City before growing into the game, and in the second half were much the better team and could have easily won the match.

Despite missing a number of key players, Liverpool enjoyed the greater share of possession and chances but couldn’t find a winner.

One of the absentees was centre-back Ibrahima Konate, who picked up an injury during Liverpool’s 5-1 thrashing of Sparta Prague on Thursday.

Joe Gomez replaced him in the starting XI and was impressive, keeping the likes of Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne largely in check.

After the game, Klopp questioned why the 26-year-old has not been been included in an England squad for over three years.

“Joe Gomez. Gareth [Southgate], honestly,” Klopp said to Sky Sports.

Gomez has not played for England since October 2020, when he featured in a 3-0 friendly win against Wales.

The defender was included in Southgate’s squad for UEFA Nations League clashes with Belgium and Denmark later that month, but he did not get off the bench.

It was Southgate who gave Gomez his senior England debut back in 2017, when he played 65 minutes in a friendly against Germany.

In total he has made just 11 appearances for the Three Lions.

Gomez won’t have many opportunities to force his way back into the national team set-up in time for the Euros in Germany this summer.

England will face Brazil and Belgium in friendlies later this month, and will then take on Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in June after Southgate has picked his Euro 2024 squad.

England will kick off their Euros campaign against Serbia on June 16.
