“I was crying” – Sven-Goran Eriksson sends an emotional message on dreaming of coaching Liverpool…

The poignant moment unfolded at a packed Anfield as Sven-Goran Eriksson, battling pancreatic cancer, experienced a deeply emotional encounter managing Liverpool, if only for a day. The stadium reverberated with the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” stirring both Eriksson and the fans, as he fulfilled his lifelong aspiration.

Under Eriksson’s stewardship, a blend of Liverpool legends showcased their prowess, securing a 4-2 victory against Ajax legends, captivating the audience with a display of skill and nostalgia. While the term “legend” may vary in its application, the spirit of the occasion transcended mere athletic prowess.
Eriksson’s journey, from his native Sweden to the pinnacle of football management, marked by stints with renowned clubs and national teams, was punctuated by the unfulfilled dream of leading Liverpool. Despite the challenges he faces, his tenure at Anfield symbolized the triumph of spirit over adversity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans and players alike.

“I was crying,” he admitted at a rendition of Liverpool’s traditional pre-match anthem. “[It is] a memory for life. It’s been my dream club all my life – even when I had England, I also supported Liverpool, but I couldn’t say it at that time. “It’s a good finish, to finish with Liverpool, it can’t be much better than that.”

“He is the boss out there – of course he still has it!” Eriksson said of Gerrard, who is now managing Saudi side Al Ettifaq.

“It’s fantastic, they come from all over the place, all over Europe and he [Gerrard] is coming from another part of the world to do this and it’s fantastic.”

“I know I’m only going to play in front of this crowd another couple of times maybe. That’s if I stay off the carbs and stay off the beers!

“I was just looking round at the end thinking to myself, ‘This is going to [happen] less and less so just savour every moment.’ It was brilliant.”
