Premier League makes one big change that Klopp always wanted

Following Jurgen Klopp’s advocacy for player welfare, the Premier League has made the decision to abolish the winter break, marking the first season without the German manager at the helm.

The concept of a mid-season break was initially introduced in the 2019/20 season but has since been inconsistently implemented.

Klopp’s stance on player rest was evident when he prioritized the well-being of his squad, opting to skip an FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury to honor the winter break. However, the lack of consistency in scheduling led to challenges in fully realizing the benefits of the break.

Now, the Premier League has opted to remove the winter break from the calendar altogether, citing the later start date for the new season (August 17) as the primary reason for its elimination.

A statement published by The FA read: “The mid-season break is removed from the calendar to allow a mid-August start date for the Premier League.

“This longer summer break allows all Premier League clubs to be better able to ensure that players get a consecutive three-week break in the summer.

“This takes into account expert advice from medical and technical departments, which values a longer period of complete rest in the summer rather than a short break in the winter.

“The agreement has been approved by the FA Board and the Premier League Board and shareholders.”
