Wayne Rooney immediately calls out Virgil van Dijk after Sky Sports post-match interview

Wayne Rooney was not a fan of Virgil van Dijk’s comments after Liverpool were beaten 2-0 by Everton.

Wayne Rooney immediately called out Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after his post-match interview following the 2-0 defeat to Everton.

Liverpool suffered a first Merseyside derby defeat at Goodison Park since 2010, with Jarrod Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on target.

The Reds were poor in Jurgen Klopp’s final fixture against Everton and not for the first time, Van Dijk was critical of his side’s performance as they lost ground in the title race.

But plenty picked up on the Dutchman having a dig when he said, “It’s time to focus on the 12:30 kick-off again” – referencing the upcoming trip to West Ham on Saturday.

Klopp has regularly kicked up a fuss about early kick-offs and the broadcasters in various interviews.

But Manchester United legend Rooney, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, felt the need to address Van Dijk’s remarks.

And the 38-year-old did not hold back, scolding Van Dijk and stating, “That Liverpool team should be wanting to be on the pitch tomorrow”.

“I think the worrying thing there – and I think it’s happened a lot throughout the season as well.

“He’s the captain and he’s talking about Liverpool getting outfought but again we’re hearing about 12:30 kick-offs after he’s just lost a derby.

“That Liverpool team should be wanting to be on the pitch tomorrow morning to get the next game going.

“When you lose a game, especially a derby game, you want the next game to come quick.

“We’ve heard it so many times this season with Liverpool about 12:30 kick-offs.

“Get on with it! That’s part of your job! Get on with it and you should be ready to play.”

Liverpool have four games remaining in the league as after the trip to West Ham, they take on Spurs, Aston Villa and Wolves in their final three matches.

They are three points behind leaders Arsenal and one clear of Manchester City, who have two games in hand.
