Liverpool continue to be linked with a high-profile move for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.
The Reds have so far been especially quiet in the transfer window, with the first signing of the Arne Slot era yet to be confirmed.
At the moment, it’s just about anybody’s guess as to who that could be. Liverpool have been linked with all sorts of players, but nothing concrete has really emerged.
That started to change on Saturday, with reports that Liverpool have been in discussions over the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.
With Newcastle needing to make a big sale before Sunday’s Premier League PSR deadline, there have been claims that Gordon could be on his way to Anfield.
Fabrizio Romano offers Anthony Gordon update
Talks over Gordon’s move to Liverpool are initially said to have broken down over Newcastle wanting Jarell Quansah as part of the deal.
Despite that block in discussions though, it has been claimed that Liverpool could return a second time for Gordon.
As ever with transfer news, Reds supporters will have been looking for an update from window specialist Fabrizio Romano.
And taking to his YouTube channel on Saturday afternoon, Romano provided the very latest over what’s going on with Liverpool and Gordon, including how the player himself feels about a potential move to Anfield.
“Let me tell you that the interest of Liverpool in Anthony Gordon is absolutely genuine,” says the reporter.
“We had rumours on several clubs for Gordon, I’m told that Paris Saint Germain were offered the possibility to go for him but at the moment they have different targets in that position.
“Liverpool really considered that possibility,” Romano adds. “They had discussions with Newcastle about Anthony Gordon.
“At the moment there is still no agreement on the value of the player, on how much Newcastle would require but for sure the interest is genuine and what I’m hearing is that the player would be open to a move to Liverpool. So, it really depends on the clubs.”
Will Liverpool sign Anthony Gordon?
There will be plenty of Liverpool supporters now getting excited over the prospect of Gordon joining their squad this summer.
However, it’s important to note that these negotiations do appear to have been initiated by Newcastle.
With their PSR deadline looming, they need to do something very quickly. For Liverpool, they have no such concerns.
As a result, we’d be a little surprised if the Reds push ahead with this deal before Sunday. It seems as though Gordon would cost a princely sum and Liverpool won’t be forced to pay more than they’d like.
Having said that, this could be a unique opportunity for them to bring in a homegrown player who might otherwise have been unobtainable.
From Gordon’s point of view, he’s a boyhood Liverpool fan who could fulfil a lifelong dream by joining the Reds. Why would he not be interested?
