Liverpool ended their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 4-1 win against Sevilla, with a number of key players making Arne Slot’s starting XI.
The Dutch coach gave Liverpool fans their biggest hint yet of who’s likely to start for the Reds on Saturday against Ipswich Town, with the result giving supporters something to be excited about. Here’s how we rated the players.
Defence
Alisson Becker: 6 – Back in Liverpool colours after a disappointing summer with Brazil at the Copa America, Alisson Becker enjoyed an easy day at the office for the Reds, with Sevilla failing to really challenge the former AS Roma keeper between the sticks.
Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7 – Despite making his first appearance in pre-season, Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t look out of place as the England star impressed at Anfield. The fullback assisted Diogo Jota for the opener, and Sevilla struggled to break down the left with the right-back in good defensive form.
Jarell Quansah: 7 – Jarell Quansah has been one of the big winners in pre-season this summer, and the England international again showed today why he’s one of the most exciting defensive prospects in the Premier League with an assured performance at the back against Sevilla.
Virgil van Dijk: 7 – Just like his centre-back partner, Virgil van Dijk was imperious at the back for Liverpool against their La Liga opponents, with the Dutch international showing why he’ll be key for Slot in the new Premier League season.
Kostas Tsimikas: 7 – With Andy Robertson still out injured, Kosta Tsimikas retained his spot in the starting XI, and the Greek international was again impressive down the left, with Sevilla struggling with the fullback’s attacking prowess.
Midfield
Ryan Gravenberch: 8 – Starting as the deepest midfield, Ryan Gravenberch impressed against a lively Sevilla side. The £34m Liverpool midfielder failed to set the world on fire under Jurgen Klopp, yet things are looking good for the Dutchman working with Slot.
Alexis Mac Allister: 5 – Another player making their first appearance for Liverpool this summer, Alexis Mac Allister endured a quiet game in midfield alongside Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai. The Argentine international had a slow start last year, and the 25-year-old could experience something similar again this season.
Dominik Szoboszlai: 5 – An excellent burst of pace to assist Luis Diaz for his second goal of the game, but overall, it was a disappointing game from Dominik Szoboszlai. Liverpool are yet to find the Hungarian international’s best role, and Slot will have his work cut out over the midfielder in the new season.
Attack
Mohamed Salah: 6 – One of Mohamed Salah’s more quieter games this summer in pre-season, the Egyptian international still provided some good moments for Liverpool despite failing to find of the back of the net, with the winger still looking in good nick ahead of next weekend.
Diogo Jota: 8 – Diogo Jota’s wondergoal got the ball rolling for Liverpool as the Portuguese international scored arguably the goal of the summer for the Reds. The former Wolves man has looked good all pre-season, and the 27-year-old attacker might have earned himself a spot in the starting XI for next week.
Luis Diaz: 8 Man of the Match – Liverpool’s liveliest attacker on the day as Luis Diaz showed why he’s going to be such a threat for Slot in the new season with two great goals in the first-half. The Colombian international looks in top form heading into Saturday’s Premier League opener against Ipswich Town.
Substitutes
Vitezslav Jaros: 6 – Played the final 30 minutes and was helpless in stopping Gerard Peque’s curler from beating him at the far post.
Trey Nyoni: 7 – Trey Nyoni has been the breakout youngster for Liverpool this summer, and the teenager capped off pre-season with an incredible volley against Sevilla.
Luca Stephenson: 6 – Another appearance from the bench for the young defender, who did well as Alexander-Arnold’s replacement.
Stefan Bajcetic: 6 – Tidy performance from Stefan Bajectic, who could be eyeing a love move away this month.
Joe Gomez: 6 – Solid from the bench, with Joe Gomez and Quansah looking strong together once again at the back.
Tyler Morton: 6 – Good cameo but failed to create anything of note in the final third.
