Liverpool’s Curtis Jones was the star as the Reds defeated Chelsea at Anfield to reclaim top spot in the Premier League – and he caught the eye of Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has sent his congratulations to Curtis Jones after the Liverpool midfielder’s wonderful performance against Chelsea in the Premier League. The Reds were good value for their 2-1 win against Enzo Maresca’s side but they had to work hard for the three points.
Liverpool took the lead in the first half when Jones was hacked down in the area by Levi Colwill. Mohamed Salah took the responsibility from 12 yards to fire the hosts into the lead.
After Jones was brought down for a second time in the penalty area, Liverpool thought they would have an opportunity to double their lead but for VAR to intervene and overrule the on-field decision. This call looked like it would have major consequences on the outcome when Nicolas Jackson beat the offside trap to level things up.
But moments later, that man Jones was in the right place at the right time to guide the ball past Robert Sanchez and secure the three points. After the final whistle, the 23-year-old took to Instagram to insist that he was merely getting started this season.
“Statement! More to come and on to the next,” he wrote as several teammates praised the midfielder in the comments section. One of those to wish Jones well was Newcastle forward Gordon who replied with a love eyes and fire emoji to the post in a bid to show his support to the Liverpool man.
Gordon is currently the subject of much speculation at the moment as rumours circulate that Liverpool are still interested in signing him in the future. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe recently admitted that while talks took place in the summer between the Reds and the North East club, the chances of the England international leaving for Anfield were slim at that stage.
Jones and Gordon have formed a friendship off the pitch thanks to their involvement with the England youth teams from the U18s up to the U21s.
