Liverpool Set to Beat Manchester United to the Signing of Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman

Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of securing a deal for a player who was also on Manchester United’s radar.
The Premier League champions have already made significant moves in the transfer market this summer, signing top talents such as Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez.
In addition, players like Marc Guehi, Hugo Ekitike, Viktor Gyokeres, and Alexander Isak have all been linked with potential moves to Anfield.
Now, a surprise development has emerged. According to The Times journalist Paul Joyce, Liverpool are closing in on the signing of goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from Preston North End on a free transfer.
Joyce revealed via social media:
“Liverpool close to signing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End. He will provide cover for Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili, with Jaros and Davies heading out on loan to Ajax and Crawley Town next season.”
A key benefit of the deal is that Woodman qualifies as an Association Trained player, meaning he won’t occupy one of Liverpool’s 17 non-homegrown slots on their UEFA squad list.
Before this move, Woodman was reportedly a target for Manchester United, with The Sun reporting that the Red Devils were considering him for a third-choice goalkeeper role. However, they opted to extend Tom Heaton’s contract instead.
With this smart acquisition, Liverpool not only strengthen their goalkeeping depth but also gain a strategic advantage in squad registration.
