You can’t say no to Liverpool – Arne Slot has made dream move but I know how harsh it can be

Former Liverpool defender Jan Kromkamp has backed his compatriot, Arne Slot, to be a success at Anfield – but has sent a warning to the Reds’ new head coach.
Jan Kromkamp has sent a warning to Arne Slot after his appointment as Liverpool’s new head coach.
The Dutchman was confirmed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor last month, and officially started work on June 1 after joining the Reds from Feyenoord. During his three seasons with the Eredivisie outfit, he won the league title, KNVB Cup, and reached the Europa Conference League final.
Kromkamp, who is manager of Dutch lower league side CSV Apeldoorn, enjoyed a year-long stint with Liverpool during his playing career. While he would only make 18 appearances for the Reds after signing from Villarreal in January 2006, he was a member of the side that won that season’s FA Cup.
While the former Netherlands international has fond memories of his time at Anfield, he’s warned Slot about the English media. However, Kromkamp is still delighted to see his compatriot make a ‘dream’ move and, backing him to be a success, knows from his own experience that is a switch that is impossible to turn down.
“This is truly a dream transition,” he told Omrop Fryslan. “That train only comes by once and then you have to go for it.
“All fans live for Liverpool and that is great. It is one of the most beautiful clubs in the world, but that of course also means that the pressure is high.
“In every country you have different types of clubs, they differ in atmosphere and identity. It is a working-class city with an important port where the people work very hard. Those supporters live for the club and spend their last money on visiting a match or buying a mug or scarf.
“At some point you arrive at the club and the employees want to park your car there. But as Dutch people, we are a bit too down-to-earth for that and you just do it yourself. The employees are happy to do that, because they have everything about for the club.”
He continued: “The English press can be harsh, but you really shouldn’t worry about that. They just have to fill a newspaper every day and so they always come up with something.
“If I were in the shoes of (Sipke) Hulshof (Slot’s assistant coach) and Slot, I would just focus on the group. Then it will be fine. They just always remain themselves.
“Of course you have a performance culture, but you also have that at Feyenoord. Slot even built a champion team there and did a great job, so I don’t know why that wouldn’t be possible at Liverpool.”

‘I am convinced’ – Virgil van Dijk hints at big summer plans as Liverpool close in on Premier League title
Liverpool are on the cusp of winning the Premier League title, with just one point needed from 4 games.
A draw or a win against Tottenham on Sunday evening would be enough for the Reds to be crowned champions for the 20th time.
With the season almost wrapped up, Liverpool will have one eye on next season, as they approach the summer transfer window.
And Virgil van Dijk, who penned a new contract last week, believes the upcoming transfer window will be an important one for the Reds.
Virgil van Dijk hints at exciting summer transfer window for Liverpool
The Liverpool captain did not shy away from confirming the behind-the-scenes news about the club’s plans for the summer transfer window.
Van Dijk hinted at a big summer window, stating that he is convinced that the club will be significantly bolstering the squad such that they can continue to compete for trophies in the coming years.
Speaking to Dutch outlet AD, he said: “The club is very ambitious, the plans for this summer sound good. There is still a lot to achieve here.
“Whatever is going to happen with players coming or leaving, I think this is going to be a very important summer for the club. I am convinced that the club management see it that way too – and we have to trust that they are going to do that in a good way. So that we can also play for prizes in the coming years.”
Liverpool plan summer rebuild under Arne Slot
Behind the scenes, new sporting director Richard Hughes has been working tirelessly to secure the futures of Liverpool’s key players.
Mohamed Salah recently signed a new two-year contract, while Van Dijk himself committed his future to Anfield by penning an extension last week.
However, not all contract negotiations have gone to plan. Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly on the verge of a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, in what would be a major blow for the Reds.
In addition to Alexander-Arnold’s likely departure, the club are preparing for several more exits.
It has been reported that Liverpool are ready to sell five players this summer. This includes Caoimhin Kelleher, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota.
The Reds are also said to be willing to cash in on Darwin Nunez this summer, with Nunez and Luis Diaz both attracting interest from Saudi.
To replace the outgoing stars, Liverpool are lining up a number of potential signings. Up front, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has emerged as a target for the Reds, while Liverpool also sent scouts to watch promising forward Hugo Ekitike.
In defence, Bournemouth duo Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez are both linked with moves to Anfield.
Players linked with a move away | Players linked with a move to Liverpool |
Darwin Nunez | Alexander Isak (Newcastle) |
Diogo Jota | Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth) |
Trent Alexander-Arnold | Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth) |
Luis Diaz | Hugo Ekitike (Frankfurt) |
Caoimhin Kelleher | Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) |
Harvey Elliott | |
Federico Chiesa | |
Wataru Endo |
FSG has frequently disappointed Liverpool fans with their lack of spending over the years. They only signed one player in Federico Chiesa over the last two transfer windows.
Which is why Van Dijk’s comments will have the supporters particularly excited, as it suggests that the players have been assured that there will be new players coming in.
As Liverpool prepare to lift the trophy once more, all eyes will soon turn to the summer rebuild — one that could define the next era at Anfield.

Star now ready for Liverpool offer as release clause TRIGGERS
Liverpool can take advantage of one release clause as it triggers. The star is set up for a move to Anfield.
Liverpool have their eyes on several strikers this summer as they look to rejuvenate their forward line. Alexander Isak is perhaps at the top of that shortlist, but the Swede will cost an absolute fortune.
That’s not to say that the Reds will entirely give up on Isak. They’ll hope Newcastle United are willing to negotiate or lower their price when push comes to shove.
There’s a need to find alternative targets, though. Hugo Ekitike is another they’re considering but once again, his price is getting out of hand.
Eintracht Frankfurt, knowing full well that their star forward is viewed as the Isak ‘alternative’, have consistently brought their asking price up. They now reportedly want around €100m and that could climb further before the transfer window.
Alternatives for the alternative, then. Liverpool’s shortlist will be extensive and at least one player on it is now confirmed as available.
Liam Delap’s release clause
It’s been reported recently that Liam Delap has a clause in his contract that triggers a release clause should Ipswich Town go down from the Premier League. The latter was made official on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
And so with that comes the release clause. Delap is now available for £30m and clubs can snap up an incredibly bright English talent for a bargain fee.
Liverpool are interested in the forward and we even think they might hold a couple of advantages in the race. Reports suggest Delap wants to move to a club without an established no.9, possibly ruling out Newcastle.
And he’s also hoping to play in Europe next season, preferably the UEFA Champions League. Again, that puts Liverpool in a very strong position as a preferred destination.
We’re not sure the forward is the Reds’ first-choice option this summer. In fact, we’re certain he isn’t.
But if Liverpool are serious about overhaul their forward line, Delap would be a magnificent signing to completely revamp the strikers.
He’s a huge talent, completely available to sign, and ticks so many boxes for the Reds. One for Richard Hughes to get done.

Steven Gerrard didn’t stutter when naming his worst ever Liverpool teammate who was ‘the biggest waste of money in Liverpool history’
Steven Gerrard has named the worst teammate that he played alongside at Liverpool, and he didn’t hold back.
Having played at Liverpool for almost all of his career as a professional footballer, Gerrard has seen some of the very best players ever to put on the red shirt.
The likes of Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso all played alongside Gerrard during his incredible 17 year stay at Anfield.
However, being at one club for so long means that Gerrard also saw some players that flopped at Liverpool, and he didn’t hesitate to pick out one as the worst during his time there.
In total, Gerrard made over 700 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 186 goals and assisting 155 while captaining the side for several years including during the iconic 2004/5 season that saw the Reds lift the Champions League trophy.
The one thing that is often held against Gerrard when people reflect on his career is that fact that he never won the Premier League, having brutally missed out in the 2013/14 season.
And in his autobiography, titled My Story, the Liverpool legend picked out one player who was signed to help turn Liverpool into champions of England as the worst teammate he ever played with.
Writing in 2015, Gerrard claimed: “I don’t really want to waste time thinking about El Hadji Diouf but it’s worth highlighting his wasted seasons at Liverpool as an example of how it can all go wrong.
“Gerard Houllier, a very good manager and a usually wise judge of character, signed Diouf in the summer of 2002. Gerard bought Diouf for £10m from Lens – solely on the recommendation of his former assistant, Patrice Bergues, who had coached Diouf there.
“I understood why Gerard rushed through the signing, but he did not really know Diouf as a person. He was one of three new signings which were meant to turn Liverpool into Premier League champions.”
Senegalese striker Diouf joined Liverpool from French side Lens in a £10million in the summer of 2002, but Gerrard argued that he was part of a trio of signing that he believes is the biggest waste of money in the history of Liverpool.
He added: “We had finished as runners-up to Manchester United the season before and a combination of Diouf, Salif Diao and Bruno Cheyrou was supposed to drive us to the title. It was probably the biggest waste of £18m in Liverpool’s history.
“We finished the season in fifth place and Diouf had sealed his place at the top of the list of Liverpool signings I liked least.
“It seemed to me that Diouf had no real interest in football and that he cared nothing about Liverpool. For example, the way he spat a huge globule of gunky phlegm at a Celtic fan in a UEFA Cup match at Parkhead in March 2003 summed up his contemptuous and spiteful demeanour.
“A few people have since asked me if I saw any comparison between Diouf and Mario Balotelli – and I’ve always said no. I’ve got respect for Balotelli; I’ve got none for Diouf.

I rejected Tottenham and Roma to sign for Liverpool – the fee now amazes me
I rejected Tottenham and Roma to sign for Liverpool – the fee now amazes me
Emile Heskey has revealed he rejected a number of clubs to complete a record move to Liverpool. The England international joined the Reds in an £11m switch in March 2000 and went on to enjoy four successful years at Anfield.
Scoring 60 goals for the club, he was a key member of the team that won the treble in 2001. He also lifted both the European Super Cup and Community Shield in the same year before winning a second League Cup in 2003.
Gerard Houllier had been keen to partner Heskey with Michael Owen upfront for Liverpool having previously been impressed by the pair’s partnership and England youth level.
And Heskey has revealed how he only had eyes for the Reds once he learned of their interest as he snubbed advances from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Roma in the process.
“To be honest, from 16, I’d had, because you play with the national team from a young age, you kind of get attached to someone – people saying they want that player, blah, blah, blah,” he recalled to Joe Cole and Ashley Cole on the ‘Football’s Greatest’ podcast.
“And I’d been looked at from the age of 16, but I wanted to play for Leicester. I wanted to establish myself. And I was on a bit of a roll there as well.
“But then you get to a point where in five years we’d been to four (finals) to the playoff final and three League Cup finals. And you’re like, what’s next? I was an international player by then as well.
“So you’re like, okay, well, let’s have a look at where we can go next. And that’s trying to win titles. Liverpool was my club and I could have gone to Villa, Spurs, could have gone to Dortmund.
“Roma were looking as well, but at the time I wanted to stay in the Premier League and I wanted to go to Liverpool. Then that came about.
“I was 22 and I was happy with how I was. I knew what I was bringing so I didn’t really overthink who I was up against. What club am I going to go to and where am I going to play, that was my thing.
“But I never really overthought that. I met with Gerard (Houllier) and he said he was bringing me in to play alongside Michael (Owen).”
Meanwhile, Heskey insists he never thought about the record £11m transfer fee at the time as he enjoyed a strong start at Liverpool.
But he admits now, 25 years on, that he is much conscious of the fact that he was once the Reds’ record signing.
“The fee is the fee, I can’t do anything about it, but it was a lot at the time,” he said. “I never thought about it at the time to be honest, it’s only when I look back I go, ‘Wow, okay.’
“The toughest part of moving to a club is are you going to hit the ground running and I was lucky enough to do that.”

Liverpool fans are disgusted by what Darwin Nunez ‘posted’ 24 hours before club can become Premier League champions
Liverpool fans are not happy with Darwin Nunez after spotting what he posted on social media just one day before they could win the Premier League title.
On Sunday afternoon, Arne Slot’s Liverpool will win the 2024/25 Premier League title if they can get a win or draw out of their match with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
Ahead of the match, several of Liverpool’s star players have spoken out about the importance of winning the title this season, with captain Virgil van Dijk asking fans attending the match to wear red to add to the occasion.
One player who has stayed relatively quiet throughout Liverpool’s run-in for the title is Nunez, but now it appears that he’s finally spoken out, fans are furious.
Since arriving from Benfica in the summer of 2022 as part of a €75 million (£64 million) deal, Nunez has largely been a disappointment at Liverpool, failing to reach the heights that many thought he could achieve in red.
When Slot replaced legendary manager Jurgen Klopp at the start of the season, some had hoped that things would change for the Liverpool striker, but it appears that this will not happen, leading to rumours Nunez could leave in the summer.
In what appears to be a now-deleted post on his X account, the 25-year-old wrote: “No wonder I don’t play more, because the last game I started in the Premier League went well and suddenly…”
Shortly after it was posted, Nunez’s alleged comment was taken down and replaced with a different post showing off a selfie of himself and teammate Alexis Mac Allister and one of his tea with the simple caption: “Good morning!”
Nunez also decided to change the profile picture of his X account shortly after he allegedly deleted the post.
https://x.com/SamueILFC/status/1916054934845317136?t=D1FPPJbQqiHR_r7glbqjvw&s=19
But that didn’t stop eagle-eyed Liverpool fans from spotting the initial post and sharing it online, and it’s safe to say they aren’t happy.
Reacting to the initial comment, one fan wrote: “Darwin Nunez is a moron. We all wanted it to work but it hasn’t. He’s childish and not worth the hassle. Simple as that.”
Another frustrated fan added: “Darwin Nunez career is officially over. Just freeze him out and sell him in the summer.”
“It’s a shame, he has all the tools but he just can’t put them all together consistently enough to be elite. I think this has sealed his fate, it it already wasn’t sealed.”

Liverpool fans completely stunned after finding out Arne Slot’s real name ahead of Premier League title win
Liverpool fans could not believe that their manager’s real name is not really “Arne Slot”.
Slot, 46, is likely to become a Premier League-winning manager when his Liverpool side face Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, with the Reds needing just a point to be crowned champions.
As a result, he will be one of the most popular men on Merseyside. And when such achievements occur, several pets and even some children may likely be named “Arne” as a nod to the Dutchman.
But that isn’t actually his name, which fans found out to their surprise.
One fan said: “Mad when you find out the manager’s name isn’t actually Arne.”
Another added: “Just googled this. Not sure I’ll ever recover.”
A third commented: “This is how myths and legends die. Delete and we’ll pretend it never happened.”
While a fourth explained: “Like finding out Pepe Reina’s name was Jose the whole time.”
So what is the Liverpool head coach’s real name?
Well, according to Wikipedia the Dutchman’s name is “Arend Martijn Slot”.
And of course, his name will not be the talking point if Liverpool secure their 20th English top-flight title on Sunday.
Despite the excitement in the city in the days ahead, Slot is not one to get over excited and revealed he has allowed two days off for his players to be “fully focused” ahead of the clash against Spurs.
“I have to wait and see because I haven’t experienced it here yet but what I know from my time with Feyenoord is that of course there is a lot of noise and everybody is very excited, but at our training ground we are just focused on the training sessions we do and trying to prepare in the best possible way for Tottenham, which is a team where all the injuries are coming back and are a team that deserves our full attention,” said Slot in his post-match press conference after the Reds’ 1-0 win against Leicester last Sunday.
“The boys also have one or two days off during this week because we’ve planned that already a long time ago and hopefully they will enjoy some time with their loved ones and be fully focused when we are back together to work towards Tottenham.”
