Paul Merson left ‘shocked’ by what Liverpool have just done in UEFA Champions League clash vs Real Madrid

Published

on

Liverpool and Real Madrid are currently going head to head at Anfield in a UEFA Champions League group-stage clash.

Arne Slot’s side are unbeaten in the competition so far and have won each of their first four games, while the Spanish giants, on the other hand, have won and lost two games apiece.

The Reds can take a major step towards qualification into the knockout stages with a win at Anfield and have named a strong lineup despite having one eye on their upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester City.

And Paul Merson has been left gobsmacked by Slot’s thought process for this game ahead of a potentially title-defining clash against the Cityzens.

Paul Merson shocked by Liverpool’s starting XI vs Real Madrid

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 3-2 win against Southampton after the international break and made just two changes to the team that started at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai have made way for Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister against Real Madrid, but Slot opted against rotating his squad heavily.

Merson can’t fathom why Liverpool didn’t make wholesale changes to their squad as the game against Manchester City is a much more important game that would give them the chance to go 11 points clear in the Premier League with a win.

“I’m shocked by the Liverpool team tonight,” said Merson on Sky Sports ahead of the game.

“I just think this game tonight is nothing compared to the weekend. I’ll go as far as to say they’ll put Manchester City to bed if they beat them on the weekend.

“I don’t see the value in this game tonight for Liverpool. If they go and beat Real Madrid, what does that mean? They’ve got three other games to play.”If they win tonight but lose on Sunday, it’s a bad week for Liverpool.”

Will Liverpool have players back from injury vs Man City?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is back in the matchday squad after limping off against Aston Villa before the international break and is on the Liverpool bench vs Real Madrid.

The likes of Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott are also back to full fitness, while Federico Chiesa is edging closer to getting up to speed after Liverpool game him a mini pre-season to help him adapt to the Premier League.

Diogo Jota is still out and faces a race against time to be fit for the game against Manchester City.

Thiago Alcantara sends emotional two-word message after Liverpool Premier League title win

Liverpool have won the Premier League title and former midfielder Thiago Alcantara has offered his reaction.

Thiago Alcantara sends emotional two-word message after Liverpool Premier League title win

Thiago Alcantara has issued a two-word message to his former Liverpool teammates after they were crowned Premier League champions. The Reds thrashed Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield to win the title with four matches to spare.

Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah found the scoresheet for Arne Slot’s side with Destiny Udogie’s own-goal completing a fine afternoon’s work. In the end, Liverpool could have and should have scored more but it didn’t matter to the end result as they were confirmed as the 2024/25 Premier League winners.

And after the game, several ex-players congratulated the Reds on their success, including Thiago.

The Spaniard, who left the club at the end of his contract last summer, posted on his Instagram story.

Sharing Liverpool’s official title-winning post, Thiago said: “Congrats lads [flexed biceps emoji]. YNWA.”

He wasn’t the only former Liverpool player to share a message following the title win. Club legend Steven Gerrard reacted on Instagram, posting a story with a simple star eyes emoji.

Gerrard also shared more Instagram stories – one of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and another of the scenes following the full-time whistle, which he described as ‘special’ – as the Reds toasted a historic 20th title win, levelling with Manchester United.

Liverpool head coach Slot, meanwhile, was in a jubilant mood post-match. He said: “I think even before the game it was already clear that we couldn’t lose this game.

“The way we arrived here with the bus, everybody on the bus thought there was no way, no way we could lose this game. It was difficult to 1-nil down but we always find a way to win.”

“Incredibly proud but not only of the players but everybody knows what effort they’ve put in.

“The people who are standing here, sports directors, my staff members, everyone, we should give them a big round of applause,” he added. “As a player, as a supporter, as a fan, or a staff member. Let’s forget that it’s the second in 35 years. It’s the second in five years.”

Linda Pizzuti John Henry's wife stuns Liverpool supporters with Anfield act before game

Linda Pizzuti Henry, the wife of Liverpool’s principal owner John Henry, surprised fans by serving up refreshments at Anfield ahead of the Reds winning the Premier League.

Present for the game, and long before Arne Slot serenaded fans, she was seen engaging with supporters from behind a food and drink kiosk within the stadium. The 46-year-old was spotted dishing out snacks and beverages to fans in the Main Stand before kickoff. With Liverpool poised to clinch their 20th English title, all eyes were on Anfield, hoping to witness history in Slot’s debut season as head coach.

Pizzuti Henry also took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes video from the Main Stand, capturing the pre-match excitement and chants.

This marked the first game she and her husband, who leads the American ownership group Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have attended since Slot’s initial home fixture against Brentford in August.

Since FSG, formerly known as New England Sports Ventures, acquired Liverpool in September 2010, the club has celebrated victories in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Club World Cup under its tenure.

Anfield was a spectacle of passion before the match, with thousands of fans gathering to generate an electrifying atmosphere.

Heeding Virgil van Dijk’s call in his matchday program notes, the fans obliged by creating a “sea of red” to support the team, arriving early to contribute to the extraordinary ambiance.

The Liverpool skipper made a rallying call last week, urging fans: “I would just encourage everyone that comes to Anfield for the remaining games of the season to wear red, come in red or come with all red, make it a red Anfield.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold just dropped biggest Liverpool contract u-turn hint yet

Trent Alexander-Arnold just dropped biggest Liverpool contract u-turn hint yet

A second Premier League title win in five years for Liverpool inspired heavy celebrations after a 5-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Arne Slot helped lead the post-match fanfare, recreating Jurgen Klopp’s iconic chant (but instead honouring his predecessor).

The celebrations didn’t end after fans and players had cleared Anfield, with the first team sharing jubilant scenes inside the changing rooms (via Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Instagram story).

Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrates Liverpool title win

It’s hardly surprising that our vice-captain was more than happy to get stuck into our title celebrations after the full-time whistle.

Going to Real Madrid in the summer or no, a Premier League title is an incredible achievement to honour.

Let’s be honest – he was hardly going to be seen sulking in a corner whilst Virgil van Dijk and Co. sang their hearts out, was he?

Still, the No.66 also didn’t need to personally broadcast his involvement in the celebrations. Is it enough to read into at a time when his future at the club is still far from certain?

It probably isn’t enough to go on without a helpful dash of optimism (or delusion – take your pick!).

Having said that, Cody Gakpo’s post-match chat with LFCTV could at least be classed as suggestive on this front.

“On the team as well. Now with Mo and Virgil staying, and hopefully Trent as well, they can keep building,” the Dutchman said.

Leaving Anfield now makes no sense

It’s nine trophies for Trent Alexander-Arnold at his boyhood club. That’s including two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph in 2018/19.

This is a club that’s built to win the biggest silverware on offer domestically and abroad. Yes, our 26-year-old fullback can rightly point out that Real Madrid are the dominant force in Europe with a record 15 Champions League wins to their name.

But is this Liverpool side one that is less equipped, in comparison to Los Blancos, to compete for future titles?

Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah have answered that question emphatically by committing to two more years under Arne Slot. Potentially their two best remaining years in the sport, it’s worth emphasising.

Has Alexander-Arnold really thought about this? Perhaps John W Henry can help put him on the right path…

Cody Gakpo drops huge bombshell on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future following Premier League title win

Cody Gakpo might have dropped a major hint about the future of Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Cody Gakpo drops huge bombshell on Trent Alexander-Arnold's future following Premier League title win

Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and an anticipated free transfer to Real Madrid has been widely reported.

Nothing has yet been announced either way but the futures of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and talismanic forward Mo Salah were tied up in the weeks before the Reds won their second league title of the Premier League era.

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp argued after they confirmed their title that the contract situations of three senior players was a motivator, not the potential distraction many observers believed it to be.

Alexander-Arnold is the only remaining holdout and was coy about his future after a goal in Liverpool’s previous game put him in front of the Sky Sports cameras last weekend.

Now, with the title secure with games to spare and the celebrations winding down inside Anfield on Sunday, a teammate ignited further uncertainty with what some fans believe and hope to have been a slip of the tongue.

Speaking long after the stands emptied with a special commemorative ‘Champions 24/25’ Liverpool shirt on backwards and a scarf tied around his head, Netherlands international Cody Gakpo spoke of his optimism about the future of the squad.

“Now with Mo [Salah] and Virgil [Van Dijk] staying, and hopefully Trent as well, they can keep building,” said Gakpo, who scored Liverpool’s third goal in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur to clinch the title.

Given the situation and the fact that Gakpo’s delivery gave nothing away, that’s one small comment that can be understood in a couple of big ways.

The first interpretation is that Alexander-Arnold is staying at Liverpool and Gakpo spoke out of turn.

The second is that Gakpo doesn’t know any more than the rest of us and sincerely hopes that Alexander-Arnold hasn’t yet made up his mind and will choose to stay at Liverpool.

Either way, it seems from Gakpo’s throwaway comment that Alexander-Arnold’s teammates haven’t had confirmation that he’s moving on.

With a switch to Real Madrid previous considered inevitable, that’s a bonus glimmer of hope on a famous day for the Reds.

Arne Slot shares what FSG owner John W. Henry told him after Liverpool won the Premier League title

Liverpool won the Premier League title for a second time with Fenway Sports Group principal owner John Henry at Anfield for the 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Arne Slot shares what FSG owner John W. Henry told him after Liverpool won the Premier League title

Arne Slot heaped praise on Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for taking a calculated gamble on him as Liverpool head coach.

Slot has guided the Reds to the Premier League title in his maiden season as boss. Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur ensured that a record-equalling 20th English championship will adorn the Anfield trophy cabinet.

Liverpool’s principal owner John Henry and wife Linda Pizzuti jetted over from America for the game. FSG made the decision to appoint Slot as Reds boss last summer following the shock departure of Jurgen Klopp. The German won seven major trophies in nine years as Liverpool supremo and he is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the world.

Slot, on the other hand, was relatively unheralded when he was prised from Feyenoord to succeed Klopp in the Anfield driving seat. Speaking at his post-match press conference after winning the Premier League, Slot admitted he knew there were people who doubted whether Liverpool had made the right appointment – but saluted FSG for making the decision.

Asked by LiverpoolWorld what Henry said to Slot while celebrating on the Anfield pitch, he replied: “Probably congratulations! I don’t remember exactly what he said but it was special for them as well to be part of this moment.

“For them to trust me in this position, maybe now everyone says it makes complete sense but the moment they signed me, maybe not everyone was as convinced as everyone is now. So that tells you what a special club this is because that they don’t always go for the most simple or obvious choice. They make the choice that is best for the club. It must be a special time for them, second time in five years that they win the league and to do it in front of our fans is special, including for them.”

Slot’s family were also in attendance at Anfield having travelled from Holland. The 46-year-old’s wife and two children have opted to stay in his homeland rather uproot to England. Slot told of his pride that they were able to be present as he etched himself into Liverpool history.

Slot added: “It is special to have them with me because my family, all of the families of the players have to make certain sacrifices if you do this job, not only this season, my whole career. For me, like you, everyone works really hard but we’re not always home.

“My family was still in Holland so, in moments, it was hard for me but also for them as well. To win it, everyone feels the few sacrifices we made were definitely worth it and it is special they experience this moment as well.”

On how he will celebrate tonight, Slot quipped: “Probably with a glass of beer or two or maybe three! If I’m correct, there will be a little party here with friends and family. The minute I leave this room they will inform me what are the plans but I know they are going to be special but there is one more special moment to come.”

Liverpool fans have had their say after spotting what Trent Alexander-Arnold did following their Premier League triumph.

Liverpool fans divided after spotting what Trent Alexander-Arnold did immediately after winning Premier League title

Liverpool beat Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday to be crowned Premier League champions.

It’s the club’s 20th league title in their storied history.

After the final whistle, the Liverpool squad and coaching staff gathered on the pitch to celebrate their latest league title.

After a rendition of Dua Lipa’s ‘One Kiss’, fans in the Kop end sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in front of the entire team.

Alexander-Arnold was among the players lined up as fans on social media have reacted after seeing what they did.

Liverpool supporters claimed he didn’t sing ‘YNWA’ as they questioned his proposed free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.

One X user wrote: “He didn’t even sing, he’s definitely leaving.”

A second said: “Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot be witnessing his and the adoration those fans have for him, without second thoughts.”

A third added: “What must be going through Trent Alexander-Arnold’s head right now.”

A fourth commented: “He’s leaving but you can tell he was hiding emotions there and perhaps is thinking if it’s the right move. At Madrid he’ll just be another guy. At Liverpool you make history.”

Another claimed: “He’s smiling that he won, but he’s going to Real.”

Alexander-Arnold has been at Liverpool for his entire footballing career, having graduated from the club’s youth academy.

But he appears set to end his association with his boyhood club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Real, who have been long-term admirers.

If Alexander-Arnold leaves Anfield this summer, then he’ll walk away with two Premier League titles and the Champions League, among other trophies.

Why Liverpool fans ‘set off’ blue flares outside Anfield ahead of Spurs match

The supposed reason behind Liverpool fans ‘setting off’ blue flares ahead of their Premier League clash against Tottenham has been revealed.

Why Liverpool fans 'set off' blue flares outside Anfield ahead of Spurs match

Liverpool beat Spurs 5-1 on Sunday to be crowned Premier League champions in Arne Slot’s debut season following his appointment last summer.

Goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Destiny Udogie (OG) secured Liverpool’s 20th league title in the club’s storied history.

There was a carnival atmosphere before kick-off as thousands of supporters gathered outside Anfield to greet the team bus.

The team bus arrived at the ground amid a cloud of red smoke as fans let off flares.

But, curiously, blue – the colour of their cross-town rivals Everton – smoke could be also be seen.

There appears to be a reason why blue flares were ‘set off’.

According to X user LesleyField5, an Everton fan purchased huge amounts of blue flares and took the blue labels off them, replacing it with red labels.

“My mates just texted me there,” he shared on social media. “He bought 10,000 blue flares and spent the last 4 weeks taking the blue labels off them and putting red labels on them

“I hope he sells the fookin lot.”

So, it seems some Liverpool fans were duped into buying blue flares for their fixture against Spurs.

Liverpool’s latest title win is their first in front of fans in the Premier League era.

Celebrations for their league triumph in the 2019/20 season took place behind closed doors amid COVID-19.

Slot’s team win the league with four games to spare and he’s already matched predecessor Jurgen Klopp’s title victories.

Liverpool are set to receive a guard of honour against Chelsea when they travel to Stamford Bridge next Sunday.

They face Arsenal a week later then Brighton before lifting the Premier League trophy at home to Crystal Palace on May 25.

Premier League statement released after new technology used for Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool

Luis Diaz equalised for Liverpool after Dominic Solanke had put the Reds ahead at Anfield.

Premier League statement released after new technology used for Luis Diaz goal for Liverpool

The Premier League have confirmed why Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool stood as the Colombian equalised for the Reds in the match that could clink the title. Liverpool fell behind to Dominic Solanke’s early goal from a Tottenham corner before Diaz levelled the scores.

But the linesman’s flag initially denied the Reds, with Dominik Szoboszlai adjudged to be offside before he crossed the ball for Diaz to tap in. Replays showed that wasn’t the case, however, and Anfield would erupt once again when – aided by new semi-automated technology – VAR confirmed that the goal was to stand.

And the Premier League’s match centre quickly confirmed the decision on X.

Their tweet read: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for Liverpool – and determined that Szoboszlai was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded.”

It’s the first time a Liverpool goal has been awarded by the new technology.

The Reds know a point would be enough to secure the Premier League title and they took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark when Alexis Mac Allister scored with a superb strike on his left foot. Cody Gakpo has since added a third goal to make it 3-1.

Semi-automated technology was brought in on April 12, it is described by the Premier League as follows: “Semi-automated offside technology is a support tool that automates key elements of the offside decision-making process for the video assistant referee (VAR).

“It will be used in close offside calls – to either confirm or recommend a change to the referee’s call on-field – as is currently the case with VAR.

“To determine close offside calls, the VAR currently needs to work with replay operators (RO) to manually determine the “kick-point” for the offside decision and then “draw” calibrated lines with a crosshair on the relevant defender and attacker, using multiple camera angles.

“Once the lines and kick-point are determined, an “offside” or “onside” decision is generated.

“Semi-automated offside technology will suggest a “kick point” and automatically create offside lines on the second rear-most defender and the relevant attacker – saving significant time in determining whether a player is onside or offside.

“Once the semi-automated offside technology-generated outcome has been reviewed and approved by the VAR, a decision visual will be automatically generated and distributed to fans in the stadium and to the media.”
